I wish the terminology around intelligence / sentience / consciousness / self-awareness / moral patienthood was better-settled. I want to be able to say that Claude is intelligent without other people inferring that I meant any of the others.

For example, it is uncontroversial for me to say that my cat is intelligent. Certainly it is generally agreed that some cats are more intelligent than others, and this a fortiori means that some cats are intelligent. Believing this doesn't commit anyone to a position on whether cats are "conscious", whatever that might mean.

Claude produces seemingly coherent, seemingly relevant responses to my natural-language utterances, and, when I express a request, its response is often satisfactory. I would like to have a word to communicate this that will not provoke an argument about whether Claude "really understands".

@mjd Not just the terminology is unsettled; nobody can agree on what those things really are in the first place.

    I propose "functionally intelligent".

@ben I think moral patienthood is better-settled than the others, perhaps because it's philosopher jargon and not colloquial speech.

I don't know whether Claude _is_ a moral patient, but I think people at least agree on what it would mean if it were.

@mjd Yeah I agree that moral patienthood is better settled than the rest, and self-awareness is at least narrower than the first three.

@mjd For years I've been tossing around the idea of a talk called "self-aware programming" (the self-awareness of the programmer, not the code).

(edit: elf-aware would be cool too, but not what I meant)

@ben I think "self-aware" is also unclear. I can ask Claude about itself and its own thought processes, and it appears to give meaningful answers. But it's not clear where to draw the line between Claude and the thermostat in my furnace.

(Claude's answers to these questions are frequently wrong, but humans also give demonstrably wrong answers to this sort of question.)

@mjd True, but I sorta feel like saying something is self-aware is a weaker claim than sentience.

@mjd (And imho saying something is "intelligent" is a meaningless statement that makes no real claim at all.)

@mjd And it would be controversial for ME to say my cat was intelligent. She is a moron.
