Also known as "lightweight keyboard stand with compact footprint"

It's a "media tray stand", not a "music stand."

A few evenings I found this toad standing guard at my front door or walkway. Maybe I should hang up a tiny “Beware of Toad” sign on the door to warn off intruders. #toad #animals #nature #naturephotography

Brian Eno has said: “my feeling is that making art can be more usefully thought of as being like gardening: you plant a few seeds and then start watching what happens between them, how they come to life and how they interact.”
I have sought to translate into sound the atmosphere that I imagine arises from spontaneous germination in an untended garden.

Mini-800 update: Today I modeled a bunch of analog nonlinearities.

• Juno saw bend from discharging capacitor
• Asymmetric triangles on lots of them
• The ARP 2600 rounded-triangle "sine" wave
• The Curtis VCOs and filter chips (3340, 3372)
• The machines that make triangles by folding saws
• Filter and mixer saturation/soft clipping
• The MS-20's filter at saturation
• Voice card drift (not just static individual variance), and a "tune" button to reset the drift

Since I only own a few of the machines we're modeling here, most of these are implemented by looking at schematics and then listening and saying "mmyeah that sounds about right" or "needs more grit" by ear memory. So, if you own one of these and want to check out how well the character is modeled, I beg you to download and build these and listen to them and compare against your hardware and let me know what you think. (attn @dwenius) Hit me up if you need help building. You don't need a Raspberry Pi; you do need Linux (it uses ALSA) to run it and Bazel to build it. (And a ROM file for the DWs wavetables; I don't provide one.)

Alternatively, please feel free to send me your vintage hardware as a contribution to the project.

Ironically the Poly-800 (the first synth implemented here) is the last to get its oscillators and filter modeled, because (a) they aren't shared with any of the other engines (the DWs do share the filter, not the oscs), and (b) I can just throw mine on the scope for that one, and I haven't yet.

Hell, the average coding model does more to give freedom of control over software to its user than GNU has done in the decades it has existed.

You want to add an option to ls? It'll take ten minutes. You want to fix a flaw in Vim? Half an hour. Welcome to the new normal, where suddenly programmers aren't special anymore.

Fundamentally, GNU and FSF are about elevating the programmer above the user -- the user is only given control over software, only treated to respect as a person, only given agency, to the extent they are willing to become a programmer.

Well there's a thread I wish I'd skipped.

Actually that would have been on the quiz in one of my undergrad classes, but I dropped it because the professor was an asshole and by three weeks in I could tell I knew more about the topic than he did.

I treated "knowing makes and models of cars" and "familiarizing myself with the discographies of classic rock bands" as curricula.

I still do this. Knowing how an ARP Quadra works will be on the quiz someday, I just know it.

As a kid, I always assumed there would be a quiz.

So, there are a lot of opinions about Behringer. I have several, myself.

I'm pretty clear on why Behringer is allowed to make a clone of, for example, the Roland SH-5 (Behringer MS-5, which I have and like), or the Minimoog, or even the Moog Subharmonicon. I notice they never use the original synths' names, not even in descriptions.

What I don't get is how they're allowed to use the trade dress of those synths. A Behringer MS-5 looks very very much like a Roland SH-5 (minus the Tolex case), with the MICR font and the olive/gray/black scheme and all. Or their Wave or UB-XA, which look pretty close to the new OB-X8 and the old PPG (and the new Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave).

I do notice that the clones of newer stuff don't look like their "originals", but older stuff often looks exactly like it.

Is there a time limitation on that sort of trade-dress stuff? Some of these are in active use (Arp 2600), even.

Curious.

mini-800 new synths today (yesterday, uhh, gnite):

• Moogs! Prodigy, Rogue, MG-1, Liberation, Source, Sonic Six, Micromoog, Multimoog
• Oberheim Xpander, Matrix-12, Matrix-6
• Roland RS-101, RS-202, RS-09, RS-505; SA-09

I think this brings us over 70 synths across 18 instrument engines? (I.e., the three Obies above are one instrument engine, and it can reach patches for all three synths.)

So I guess the US is allied with both Russia and Israel now, and chummy with North Korea. I wonder what the next "Axis of Evil" will be.

DAMMIT! A Husky was walked, right in front of our house.
