Fundamentally, GNU and FSF are about elevating the programmer above the user -- the user is only given control over software, only treated to respect as a person, only given agency, to the extent they are willing to become a programmer.

Following that logic down the road a bit, you easily arrive at why Free Software types are so hostile to agentic coding -- they don't want the barriers lowered, they don't want the plebs coming in and messing up the place. So they latch on to copyright, which they hated until it was suddenly convenient, as an excuse to insult and degrade those they deem inferior.

The GPL was written as a hack to abuse copyright into doing the opposite of its intended purpose -- to turn a monopoly into something anyone could benefit from. By all rights, the FSF should be over the moon that LLMs exist. They should be at the forefront of training coding models on GPL code, and encouraging their use. But no, that might let in Hoi Polloi.

Hell, the average coding model does more to give freedom of control over software to its user than GNU has done in the decades it has existed.

You want to add an option to ls? It'll take ten minutes. You want to fix a flaw in Vim? Half an hour. Welcome to the new normal, where suddenly programmers aren't special anymore.

You know what I did today? I made Pi.GUI (an agent harness) write an extension for itself that gave it Bash-like command history. It took five minutes and a program restart, worked perfectly the first time, and added enormous value to the program for me.

And I have never looked at a single line of the Pi.GUI codebase. No clue what's going on in there, and I'm a 30+ year programming vet.

Yeah, that's right, I literally typed into the box "It'd be nice if Pi.GUI supported Bash-like command history with the up key" and the fucking thing went and did it for me, perfectly. No filing a feature request, no mucking about with someone else's codebase, just expressing a desire and boom, it's done.
