a binary package manager called packenby

@davidgerard

remember that netbsd is responsible for the creation of openbsd.

that is, they were sick of theo being... theo... and told him to sling his hook.

You can checkout pkgsrc HEAD with CVS:

😬

aaand i guess i will have to recompile my kernel to try out amdgpu. so totally not a baptism of fire.

i think a desktop-focused netbsd distribution (not that i'm committing to such a thing of course) could probably use a new installer too.

well, i have netbsd installed to an external drive and i can run firefox, albeit without acceleration.

i am thinking the existing package manager is a bit... basic. however i also happened to notice chez scheme is in the netbsd repos, so i could just write one in idris.

i am burning the netbsd image to the usb stick to try it on real hardware

like hypothetically, i could fix most of this, it's really just drivers (which i can't because i don't have tons of hardware to test on) which are enormously problematic.

okay, netbsd's out of the box experience for desktop is... not great.

there are many things that could be done to improve this, but sadly that doesn't include me porting drivers for graphics cards i don't own.

so with that massive caveat, who would be interested in a netbsd-based desktop distribution?

the uh, out of the box experience is a bit...dated.

not many people use this as a desktop, do they?

i am looking at the netbsd dvd installer in qemu. there is a choice of 5 languages (english, german, french, castellano, polish). we are now installing things. in english.

right, so about that netbsd i was going to try...

oh yeah, i let him have it verbally. he shut up pretty quickly because he realised i was not going to be intimidated by his assholery.

lovely, friendly people, the locals, hassling me about having my bicycle in the lift.

anyway i am going to piss about with netbsd for the rest of the day, hbu?

if you see a comment saying a test or script has been generated by LLM in a github repo, how does that make you feel about the repo it's in?

there's a language server

i am all sorts of going off emacs integration right now.

technically emacs integration is just a luxury, but i bet the lack of it annoys me.
