    Btw I'm allowed to generalize about Germans because they're my fav people to work with and also my grandma's bicycle got stolen during the war.

    @Gina @sybrand When I worked in the Hague in the early 80s I shared an office with a Dutchman whose father had his bicycle expropriated like that. Apparently, whenever he met a German he demanded his bicycle back and went off on a long rant about what I good bicycle it was, etc. Once he'd got that off his chest he was perfectly polite and friendly.

    I thought it was just the Austrians.

    I got an Austrian 'hard stare' when I was on a train on a hot day (only ones in the carriage). A family got on at the other end. Dad came over and ordered me to shut the window. I refused. Then the mum came over and shut the window. I re-opened it. Then the daughter came over and demanded. That was a no from me. Whole rest of the train empty. I had 30 minutes of 3 hard stares. National character/culture? Who knows?
