Why are people still bitching about "both sides" as if we didn't have an election two years ago that proved how wrong that trope is? I understand being driven nuts by what is happening in the U.S. right now, and remembering that no past government had clean hands, but please. We know by vivid recent experience that one side is MUCH worse, and that the worse side can only get away with a lot of its shit because it also holds the legislature. We also should, if we're paying attention, know that there's more than one side, and that a few real progressives are running for Congress and other important offices. Despair is the enemy of progress. Buck up, read about all your local candidates and propositions, and save the fears for 2 a.m. like everyone else. #USPol

@spiegelmama It's because the goal of those "leftists" is to help the Republicans win.

That's it. That's the only thing they actually prioritize. Over everything else. EVERYTHING else.

Their core identity is to hate "the Democrats". There's nothing Republicans can do which can make them hate Republicans more than Democrats.

What's interesting is that there isn't any equivalent on the right.

@isaackuo I don't think that's necessarily true for all of them, or even most of them. They believe hard in things, and because they believe hard in those things, they think those things must be morally right, and therefore if you don't think the same way, you're morally wrong. I have been like that in my life, but I stopped being so self-centered in my 20s. They feel betrayed by the people who should help them, and I get it.

@spiegelmama Well, maybe so. But they've been manipulated into becoming useful fools, by those who directly benefit from that (Republicans and their extremely wealthy backers).

I am, at this point, not very sympathetic to those who are still defined by hating "the Democrats".

Either way, it's interesting that there isn't any equivalent on the right. Why not?

@spiegelmama Like, there are lots of West Virginians who live in ex-coal country who have generational bitterness over the fact that politicians have betrayed them.

They've got the same level of bitterness or even more. And they KNOW neither side is going to help them.

But this just makes them even more committed to always voting Republican. At least that way, the politicians won't do anything to help black people.

@isaackuo Sometimes people create their own hell. And when they do so just to take other people down with them, it takes a better person than I am to not believe they deserve it. This makes me a not-very-nice person, I know, and it's not productive. Someone else is going to have to help people like that.

@spiegelmama it isn't like some of us tried to warn what was going on behind the scenes only to be told we are over reacting and being ignored.

EDIT: Just so everyone is aware... on the ballot, you can leave a box blank and it'll still count.

@Mellivora I mean, if complaining on the internet didn't make everyone set your priorities as theirs, what else can you do but what worked so well in the last election?

@spiegelmama doesn't help people think we can just vote to solve our problems. Le sigh.

@Mellivora @spiegelmama I don't know about you, but I don't recall meeting anyone who thought *just* voting, without doing anything else, would solve all our problems.

I have, however, seen many online proclaiming that voting won't do *anything* to solve our problems. Especially when said at election time, that reflects either despair or a political suppression operation. Either way, I won't tolerate attempts to disarm us of one of the most important of the many weapons we have against fascism.

@JMarkOckerbloom I have actually met someone who thought that. So there are people like that out there who think voting these people out works when the problem is much deeper and more ingrained. (๑•﹏•) @spiegelmama

@Mellivora @spiegelmama Well, voting people out *does* work to stop certain problems-- just ask the voters in Hungary and Brazil, for instance. It's neither a *complete* solution, nor a one-and-done thing-- as we again see in Brazil. But just like stopping the bleeding is a crucial first step in healing an injury, getting abusers out of office is a crucial first step in reversing the effects of their abuse.

Are people still doing that? I think I must have muted all of them. (Block blocking kolektiva was a huge win.)

@spiegelmama @jztusk Huh. Interesting. I actually follow quite a few people on kolektiva, and they seem fine to me. Of course, it's not difficult to curate my direct feed just to "okay" folks (ones that I feel like following).

I guess I've just been lucky with reading discussion threads, where random folks I don't follow can obviously participate.

@isaackuo I had followed a few people on the server, so it was a more difficult decision than it should have been. But I saw more straight-up Russian propaganda and repellent antisemitism there than on any other server in the fediverse (that wasn't prior blocked by my admin). Blech.

    @spiegelmama @isaackuo@spacey.space

Yeah, there were two really good, insightful accounts there that kept me from blocking, but the frequent 99+% junk, and the repeated need to mute/block individually that that brought with it, made it not worth keeping. It's possible I'm missing things now, but I don't think so.

@spiegelmama I'm a registered Democrat living in Vermont and will vote as such. In terms of philosophy I believe in a system based on well regulated free market capitalism with fair taxation that pays for a strong social safety net.
