OK, credit where credit is due, they're doing their bit to support Alberta's alcohol industry. Because right now I want to drink an unhealthy amount.

This of course, probably not accidentally, cuts both major Alberta cities off from the federal Housing Accelerator program. Because if there's one thing these assholes can't handle, it's the feds doing something good and helpful - can't have Ottawa getting any credict can we?

"Allow 4 units per residential lot as-of-right* to support infill development in low-density neighbourhoods municipality-wide (minimum program requirement for Large/Urban stream)."

This, a month or two after the fucking transportation minister, who lives in fucking Innisfail, decided to take 5 minutes between Jägerbombs to decree that he knows more about planning transportation for a city growing toward two million than its transportation planners and therefore bike lanes are prohibited.

These fucking ignoramuses!

Fuck this fucking provincial government! Edmonton city council spends FIVE YEARS of careful consultation and planning to design a zoning bylaw to shape its future, to try to bring Edmonton back from the brink of an unaffordable car choked shithole.

Then the fucking municipal affairs minister, who lives in Peace Fucking River, decides he knows more about planning a city's growth toward two million people, than the people elected to do so.

Will it do any good? Probably not, but it was a little cathartic.

The other day we got a gross UCP referendum propaganda leaflet (but actually paid for by the government of Alberta, so all of us paid for it with our taxes, not just UCP donors), which finally motivated me to put together this lawn sign I'd been thinking about.

I've been enjoying Arabian coffee for a while now. I have tried a few times to make my own imitation, and was clearly being too timid with the spices. Yesterday I picked up a package that told me not just the ingredients but their proportions, and now I see just how very much too timid I was being!

But even more at fault was all the architects and engineers involved in designing and approving the pony wall at the northwest corner of that intersection - it means drivers turning right and pedestrians crossing from that corner can't see each other until the very last second.

If anyone isn't paying perfect attention - and people make small errors of attention all the time - it's incredibly dangerous.

That thing never should have been built, and it needs tearing down right away.

Walking home a couple hours ago, I saw someone get hit by a car crossing Gretzky drive southbound at 118 ave. They're alright but their bike is messed.

Technically the driver was at fault - they had a red light, the person they hit was crossing on a walk light, the driver didn't fully stop at the red and did the classic turn right / look left to merge.

And out she comes.

Unfortunately I took it out too soon, so it had to go back in the oven with the first serving unceremoniously plopped back in the void from its removal. But it looked nice for a minute there.

Oh yeah, recipe from the French cookbook/food porn album I have, by Maria Villegas and Sarah Randell, lavishly photographed by Chris Jones.

Everybody bake the same cake - clafoutis edition. Normally it's a cherry cake but I'm using raspberries because that's what the garden is giving us right now, the cherries were at the end of July.

In the oven she goes.

Getting ready to drive the last 500 km home, and we find the radiator leaking coolant all over the ground. Take it to the local mechanic, and he prescribes a tablespoon of black pepper added to the radiator. Apparently this is an old trick to temporarily plug leaks until you can get a proper fix. Fellow in the grocery store parking lot wasn't sure what to make of us seasoning our van.

My daughter has downloaded a plant ID app to her phone. It turns out I'm a healthy maidenhair tree.

I did not install Linux to find myself faffing about with fricking *registry keys* Do Gnome users just accept this nonsense?

And then Bazzite is this new thing I'm not familiar with, an "atomic" distro. Oh my gosh it's so not what I'm used to. Here I'm pretty sure a lot of my dislike for it is just not being used to it, not any kind of objective worse-ness. But oh this is so frustrating to figure out at this stage...

I've built a new computer (a repurposed BC250 bitcoin mining card), and installed Bazzite Linux on it because that supposedly has a kernel that's already got the right support for its particular hardware.

But I picked the Gnome build not KDE and oh my gosh I hate it. I'm trying to give it a chance because it's something new and we never like change.

But my gosh - the shortcuts in the "Dash" launcher thing aren't even plain text files, they're in some binary database? WTF?

Dumpster, dumpster, burning bright
Full of garbage from the right,
What weird hippy's world view
Has room for such a varied stew?

From what fervid lobster guys
Came the theories here surmised?
From what 4chan message board?
Whose the copypasta hoard?

And what fascists, and what trolls
Thus remixed the Protocols?
When the yoga fans descend,
Whence the bigotry they send?
