I'm so tired I honestly don't know I have the spoons to move off Linux... I think I have to just limit future exposure when using new/updated software.
(Also very hard to move to OpenBSD full time, for gaming reasons)

For OpenBSD games, there's a relatively large amount of games that run, but obviously no unity or wine: https://github.com/playonbsd/OpenBSD-Games-Database/tree/main
NetBSD has Linux compatibility and wine, which helps to run some more games, but getting a game working requires extra effort. I have a virtual machine for games because of that, with Debian and Win10

Oct 15, 2026, 9:45 PM@sackofbones @jessienab @lanodan that's pretty great actually! I think the Linux compat code and the nvmm hypervisor both need a bit of TLC. I think it should not be impossible to get podman running with Linux kernel that is hardware acceleration-virtualised

I've been following this thread, and interested in others' experiences. I tried to experiment with NetBSD, OpenBSD, GhostBSD in VMs, but my main PC is mostly used for desktop and gaming. I recently moved from Win11 to CachyOS and it's mostly a huge improvement, most apps and games run great and I like the desktop experience with KDE. Running say NetBSD, would I be able to have a CachyOS or Windows VM with GPU pass-through? Would that run games well?
@skylark13 @jessienab @lanodan afaik GPU pass-through is not supported right now, but I have looked into it and it seemed at least theoretically possible to implement without any corporate backing/multi year time investment. So that might be an option in the future if someone implements it.
Another option might be to use a hypervisor and run both NetBSD and Linux on top; I have not researched this option, mostly because all the powerful hypervisors I know about are slop, but perhaps I should. I'll report on it if I'll get to it
@jessienab @nina_kali_nina @lanodan for now, I’ve configured my Linux hosts to never update to Linux kernel 7 or higher. I have in mind to move to BSD eventually, but I’m starting by limiting the infiltration of slop
@jessienab I recommend Lumina* as an XFCE replacement

IIRC the dev leading Xfce's Wayland compositor is using LLM code but the X11 version is unaffected, for now at least
