@techokami oh, that sometimes happens to me, I have to hit ctrl+c a few times and it magically starts up. I feel like it must be me misconfiguring something, but looks like it might be a common-ish issue, huh. Good job with the installation, though!

@techokami did you reboot? It is worth checking your /etc/rc.conf for bogus config, then ifconfig for the physical connection, and then making sure that dhcpcd can get the IP configuration

@nina_kali_nina @plzupgrademe @netbsd hhhhhh okay back on Linux, I can use fedi with a keyboard again and my phone not tethered to my comp...

What on earth was going on? Everything was going good, but then when I finally got XFCE going, my internet lifeline went kaput and refused to come back. And even then, I would have rather gotten KDE going instead, but the official docs from NetBSD have nothing on getting it going.

And now that I'm back on Linux... I can't access the new NetBSD disk? GNOME Disks sees it as "NetBSD FFS" but there's no option to mount it. Which is really bad because I need a way to move my home directory to NetBSD.

@nina_kali_nina @MrDOS @plzupgrademe @netbsd Yeah I had already read this first. The information seems really stale as it refers to Linux 2.6.x! :blobfox0_0: But even then, yeah it looks like Linux can *only* see the whole partition but not the individual slices...

Hmmmm... I might reinstall and start over since the actual install was actually pretty fast. But, critical question: is it *MANDATORY* that NetBSD use FFS? Or can I use a different file system that might play nicer with Linux? I know ZFS is out of the question here, I already read the docs for that and it's messy.

@techokami @nina_kali_nina “Last edited 7 years and 6 months ago” does not inspire confidence – I'm starting to suspect that newer FFS versions are unsupported by the Linux driver. It's getting pretty late for me now, but I'm inclined to try to lab this in a VM tomorrow...

As heavy-handed as it might sound, I suspect it might be easier to launch the NetBSD installation as a VM under Linux (i.e., passing that whole NVMe device through to the VM) and copy things via SSH or rsync.

@techokami I think you should be able to use zfs for /usr but not / without much problems, actually. I have my /home and /usr on GCD, which also requires / to be a very separate thing, and I suspect the zfs setup will be similar

@nina_kali_nina @MrDOS @plzupgrademe @netbsd yeah, I was talking about ZFS for /, and the jist is that you have a tiny FFS partition that's JUST for getting NetBSD going enough to mount the partition... so, it's messy.

Ideally I'd like to have just a single partition for NetBSD, so I don't have to worry about /home and /usr getting too big and thus need to resize partitions (aaaaaaa please no), or if I were to do my original plan with getting BTRFS working on NetBSD, have my /home be on my existing Fedora SSD, so I wouldn't need to migrate things over in the first place.

@techokami with BSD, you can expect your /usr to get far larger than your / - the root essentially stays the size of the initial distro (base.tar + xbase.tar + whatever else you install), while /usr grows from everything you install (/usr/pkg) and build (/usr/src and /usr/pkgsrc). But that's a know-how that required me a few installs

@nina_kali_nina @MrDOS @plzupgrademe @netbsd this is why I'd like it all to just take the entire 2TB of disk rather than needing to dole out chunks of the space, in case one thing (/home or /usr) gets too big compared to the other
but I also know that traditionally you'd install a UNIX across multiple physical disks, because back then those disks didn't hold a lot of data, so I can see it being part of the experience
