Even if I manage to get to a terminal before the computer finishes locking up, I can't even reboot or shutdown because those executables can't be found.

I thought for a while that this was an overheating issue with the NVMe and have gone through some nonsense to try and work around that but this had also happened when I was logging and found temps to be pretty cool.

I also had one interesting data point where the CPU fan got blocked by the mount of the additional fan I jury rigged in [+1]

This caused the problem to happen almost immediately and seemed to normalise once I caught and fixed this. But I've kept an eye on those temps too and, outside of that, they've been well behaved.

I've recently had a CPU go bad on the NAS so this could be a repeat.... But I'm also suspicious of this motherboard.

It's a Gigabyte X570 itx board which has given me problems for years. Whenever I press power, there's a chance my PC will turn on. Not a guarantee because it can fail in two places [+1]

Some times it just outright fails to POST. Nothing even comes up. This is the most common one. Just press the button until it does.

But also, after going through grub and whatnot, the graphical driver may fail to load properly but the rest of the system seems to go on anyway? So I lose all output during the handover.

Always hated both of these issues but neither is a show stopper, once the machine is up, it's up. And with those specs, it's a pretty beefy machine too.

I lay the dirt on my suspicions with this motherboard to contextualise the most recent thing.

Still thinking the NVMe is the likely culprit, I've decided to experiment. Still have that 4TB plate so, overnight, I've dd'd the NVMe onto it and swapped them around.

I've used the disk for a ton of backups recently so it should be fine but once running the system.... It's not going well. Booting the arch install terminal just to chroot and run the grub install again, it was spitting out errors [+1]

All the time coming from the sata interface.

Grub installed allegedly correctly but first boot couldn't mount stuff? But then it went through on the second try but hung when loading KDE....

Couldn't get the graphical interface running properly even once.

As I sit here letting it memtest just to tick the box, I do think there's are two other things to be wary here. The data cable could just be bad (dd was done over USB using an external enclosure) or it could be dust on the mobo header [+1]

There was a lot of it and I didn't have a brush at hand or anything.

But it's not looking good. I just want the computer to work, y'know. I don't even do weird shit with this one.

From the NAS' journey of discovery I DO have a spare motherboard but it is mATX instead and the case won't fit it. So testing that is possible but very much a pain. And while I have a spare CPU, that's known bad. REALLY hoping to not have to go down THAT rabbit hole.

    Well, breakfast time I guess

And, hey. 99% of the memtest passed with no errors. Was pretty sure of this one as I think I did this check when the unmounting issue first started (literally overnight). Still, any reassurance is welcome

@VileLasagna At least the GPU is fine?

I went through something similar a few months back, swapping out MB, CPU, RAM, GPU, and trying RAM slot musical chairs, only to discover that the problem was a failed PSU. It had excellent ratings and pro reviews and came from a respected OEM and died after 2+ years of its 10 year warranty.

PC diagnostics can be utter hell. Wishing you the best on this one. If it's an X570 MB it should have 2 M.2 slots. I didn't see if you said that your boot sector/read errors persist no matter what slot you use

@NaClKnight Yeah, I remember you going through that nightmare. I think it was somewhat around the time in which I was trying to revive my NAS too.

I think most X570 mobos have 2 M.2 slots but this one only has the one on account of being a mini-ITX mobo, space is pretty tight.

And yeah, I think the GPU is fine. Didn't have the same sort of crashes I had with the 5700XT on the other machine which is pretty confirmed to NOT be all right. Would NOT want to imagine having to replace this 6900XT
