We're going to be overhauling or replacing most AOSP apps in the near future: Calculator, Clock, Contacts, Gallery, Keyboard and Phone.

The apps we created will be overhauled too. PDF Viewer is done and Camera is next. Camera and PDF Viewer will be getting many new features too.

It's a massive overhaul and may need a few releases to reach the Stable channel. We're working on a version 14 release fixing issues with the predictive back animation, tapping contacts not always showing the right SIM with dual SIM and some outdated icons/colors we missed.

Messaging will be overhauled even more. We plan to add RCS support with Messaging Layer Security (MLS). That will provide E2EE with contacts using Google Messages or iOS. RCS with MLS can already be used on GrapheneOS via Google Messages but we want to avoid people needing it.

@GrapheneOS Dual-sim user here. I do get a mismatch between the default sim on the message page (correct), and that on the contact page (incorrect).

Reassuringly, messages are correctly being sent through the SIM announced next to the bottom text field.

@GrapheneOS If two GrapheneOS users use the messaging app with that in the future, is it then encrypted too?

@zh002 Once it has RCS with MLS, it will have end-to-end encryption between installs of itself, Google Messages and iOS including for group chats where everyone has RCS with MLS support.

@GrapheneOS great work! RCS support is the only reason I'm using Google Messages instead of the bundled messaging app. I look forward to seeing it!

@GrapheneOS is there a feature or setting planed to ask before opening a link? I use SMS these days mostly to receive spam messages with phishing links. I'd rather not click on them by accident.

@GrapheneOS this would be amazing. I've hated _hated_ that RCS is supposed to be a standard but no OSS software implements it

@GrapheneOS one thing I'd love to be able to see is blocking calls based on a pattern or regex of callers. I don't need premium scam numbers calling me, they add no value.

@GrapheneOS My main gripe with the PDF viewer is that each page is its own view. I'd like the pages to be laid out vertically, so I can scroll through them. This is like most other PDF apps do it.

@alkatraz_200 We publish our apps via our App Store and we can configure it to make Messaging available elsewhere. We don't want to promote using a messaging app without E2EE though. RCS support is nearly certainly only going to be able to work on GrapheneOS since it's going to require access to APIs which are not given by the standard access for the enabled SMS/MMS app.

@GrapheneOS @alkatraz_200 if non-GOS users install the GrapheneOS App Store, will they be able to try out the new messaging app?

Every FOSS alternative to Google messages is welcome. Currently I'm using Fossify for barebones SMS functionality.

@HerrHulaHoop @alkatraz_200 Not currently since it has a dependency on a certain version of itself already being installed but we could eventually remove that. We aren't going to be able to provide RCS outside of GrapheneOS though and we don't really want people's experience with our software to be a messaging app without E2EE. We'll provide E2EE on GrapheneOS as part of RCS support.

@GrapheneOS @HerrHulaHoop what about the other apps being made for grapheneos, like the camera app. If they can be available for android or other roms, it would be great for the foss community.

@alkatraz_200 @HerrHulaHoop Auditor, Camera and PDF Viewer are available via our App Store outside of GrapheneOS. Vanadium will likely eventually be available too. We aren't sure if we want to make Messaging available outside of GrapheneOS when it can't have RCS with E2EE outside of GrapheneOS in practice.

@GrapheneOS I can't remember if it was an official statement from GOS or of it was a user that said this. I remember someone saying that having the dialer look and behave like an old piece of software was a feature not a bug, with the intention of pushing people away from using phone calls altogether. (To use signal calls instead) Was that ever or is that still the sentiment with how the phone app is getting overhauled?

@GrapheneOS Something like Zen mode? & Proper Digital Well-being with built-in screen-time and screen-reminders (full screen reminders like that of from Open-Source Stretchly app)

    @GrapheneOS as usual. Excellent work!

I’m really excited for all of these but especially to see the overhauled keyboard. The suitable keyboard alternatives IMO have just not been that usable compared to modern popular options, or the projects just haven’t worked out yet (Floris).
