One thing I do miss from the bird site is the ability to find #localnews I know something has happened near where I am but can’t find anything about it on #Mastodon Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just that Mastodon is not great for recent events?
May 17, 2026, 4:03 PMYou'll likely only see local news if you follow people, bots, or hashtags related to where you live. When I find someone who lives in a city near me, I follow them. If you live in or near a big town, you could try looking up hashtags for the name and see how many posts they get and then follow a few. If you are exceptionally lucky you might have a local newspaper or broadcaster on Fedi you can follow.
It's the primary blessing and curse of Fedi: if you don't seek it out and follow it, you may never see it.
@jrdepriest Thanks for this. I’ll have a hunt around for appropriate hashtags and follow the promising ones. It’ll be interesting (for me) to see what I uncover.
