    Attention to my faculty friends: The University of Washington Allen School of CSE is an unsafe environment for women, so as grad application season starts, please tell your students not to apply. There are at least 3 men in the systems lab that have sexually harassed numerous women and they continue to do so. More details below:

    It has been 3 months since the women of the UW systems lab sent a letter detailing three incidents of sexual harassment and bullying. The university has bounced them from the Title IX office to HR with no resolution. There is an ongoing HR investigation with the women handing over dozens of incidents and pages of documentation (emails, text messages). At least one of the men has been documented to be physically violent, and he has sexually harassed women across the department, not just in the lab.

    Despite this, the women of the lab have been forced to leave their coworking space, leaving them in a precarious position where they must risk interacting with violent men. The systems lab is still holding lab events with the men actively under investigation. The Allen School has become a place where women are AFRAID to go to work and at least three women have been driven out due to harassment. If you know women who are thinking of attending grad school, tell them to avoid UW, especially in systems. I’m happy to put them in touch with the women of the UW systems lab or discuss alternate options with them.

    @irene

    i wonder if using some tiny cameras to capture all of this is legal

    because it may be the only way to get this taken care of

    To be clear, these are issues are at the main Seattle campus? I think so because you mentioned the Allen school but want to be sure, since UW Bothell and UW Tacoma both have CS schools too

    @irene Jesus fuck, you'd think after the bullshit around Stuart Reges the CSC department would attempt to start getting their shit together

    @argentumcation This is definitely contributing to the issue. The department having to deal with Stuart made them downplay everything else and then they grew really fast in the last decade so it’s not surprising.

    @irene With a violent incident, contact the police. Try a woman's abuse center to see if they have ideas for recourse.

    @AskPippa We’ve discussed it but with it being students on visas we didn’t want to go that route and the incidents are likely not severe enough for the police to care.

    @irene Perhaps the university has a women's crisis centre? There should be one in the greater community outside the university. They might have some ideas.

    @AskPippa They did try but the center said they only deal with partner violence.

    Oh nice to see you here too as well as on Facebook. Seems your work is amounting to defending the university rather than fixing the problem?

    Please stop minimizing our experiences. Leadership may be striving to make us feel supported, but they are failing. Irene is one of the few people who has supported us unconditionally. You have never engaged with us nor heard our experiences, so why are you giving your assessment of a situation you know so little of?

    You're right that the campus entities control the process, timeline, external communication, and the ultimate response. As someone else in this thread shared, universities often mishandle these situations. They do not care about us; they simply care about not being sued

    @lazowska @irene As a student involved in this, there are a lot of things I would like to say to you but cannot because the university has repeatedly asked us to not talk about this. This is also true of the other women involved. I would just like to acknowledge that the women have read and understood what you think of the situation.

    @lazowska one of the women went to a friend’s party and received a report from a random CSE woman grad student at the party that she had been sexually harassed by one of the men from the systems lab for *months*. And this was just a typical Thursday night, so you KNOW there are more women in the department that are not speaking up. If that isn’t dire and pervasive, I don’t know what to call it.

    @lazowska There are also two additional men in the systems lab that sexually harassed a woman for a whole year, and it was so bad that she quit. But she won’t name those men because she’s scared. Again, just within the systems lab, there are FIVE active sexual harassers, I don’t even want to think about what is going on in the rest of the department.

    @lazowska @irene
    Ed, since you have posted this response across at least two different social media platforms (including creating an account on Mastodon to just post this specific response), could you please tell us exactly how this response helps in resolving the situation? All it seems to do is try to paint the university in a better light. If making the university look good and be a good environment is the goal, I'd suggest putting the same energy into working to ensure that the university resolves these situations promptly instead of talking about how the univeristy will deal with the situations.
    Talk is cheap, work is hard. Be a worker, not a talker.

    @vaas @lazowska @irene Uh, Irene is not new on Mastodon, obviously. So, FU Vaastav if that really is your name. I'll just go ahead and block you now, since you seemed to have no valid contribution. Seen your type before--on the wrong side but using deception rather than honesty for influence. You should be more like Irene.
