It seems to have fixed itself sometime in the last couple of hours. Still funny.

Finished the reviews this morning. The deadline is tonight.

Brain cannot do work if work is not practically due, as always.

I feel like the people naming RCEs are getting lazy about naming. Someone cleverly pointed out that maybe we should name the pattern.

"Don't anthropomorphize big tech companies" by Sean Goedecke https://www.seangoedecke.com/dont-anthropomorphize-big-tech-companies/

I have a hard time not boosting everything that Sean Goedecke writes, but this is another great one.

Asking for boosts to get paid work.

Things I do:

• ambient music & sound design
• light copy editing
• graphic design
• logos
• photo editing
• digital illustration
• fine art watercolor & ink

and here’s the thing right

for a period of time, apple had a group of customers who liked their products because they were a good value

capacitive touch hooked up to a good UI was worth the money

macOS was a pretty good unix hooked up to a good UI

macbook pros had their issues some years, but the power management was excellent

people have been calling apple a brand that people only bought to be fashionable for years, and it wasn’t accurate back then

unfortunately, I think apple agreed with those people. cause none of the above applies to apple devices anymore. there’s nothing particularly special about any ios device, and the UI is jankier than ever. they fired all their old unix pros. your MacBook Pro would have great battery life… if the OS and the AI shit you can’t turn off without third-party patches (for now) weren’t sucking cycles they don’t need to

apple always considered itself a fashion brand, and the people making it anything else have all been fired

It appears I should not have bothered, this whole PHP fiasco was likely overblown.

Here’s some evidence:

Genius. OP puts a private key for a bitcoin wallet with 500$ on a server which is vulnerable to this weeks PHP vulnerability and dares people to take it

watchOS 27: not even a functional watch.

Because eMudhra is in the news, I am sharing a screenshot of a footer of an email I once received from them in reply to my query about my PAN card (a government-issued tax identity and card). #eMudhra

You may also be thinking, “11 direct reports is too many direct reports.” You are correct. Hopefully I can fix this before next year.

If you remember I just started a new job, you may be thinking, “Samir, how can you do performance reviews for people you just met?” And the answer is simply to only say good things that I know are true. Right now all I care about is building trust, not evaluating people.

Manager performance reviews are due this week, and I have only done 5 of 11.

I guess I know what my Saturday plans are. Can’t do them tonight, too sleepy, it wouldn’t be fair.

Hey I'm doing one of those quote-tweet things for a thing I think is dumb.

But! It leads to an ancient internet comment that I think is entirely made for Mastodon, a story about the time my dad, in the waning age of mainframes, was working on a project to create an internet-connected bear, Poppet, which could tell your child stories pulled from a home server. In the 1990s.

From MetaFilter, where a guy my dad used to work with, coincidentally decided to tell it.

Drop-In Time is a time where I hang out in a room at the library with a big table and a lot of chairs and help people with their technology problems for two and a half hours. These are their stories. It was cold today so I was warming up some water for tea and by the time I got upstairs at three past the hour there were four people waiting for me. Whoops!

Bob and Kathy had a Medicare prescription drug plan that wasn't going to be around next year so they needed help finding a new one.

Some general knowledge questions to get you going this morning:

1) What Spanish name translates as "God has been gracious"?

2) Complete the song title "Stairway __ Heaven".

3) What's the magic number?

4) Name a popular private key.

5) Which English boy band comprised Abz Love, Scott Robinson, Ritchie Neville, Sean Conlon, and Jason "J" Brown?

6-7 (combined question): Name an Internet meme from 2025ish.

8) What is the past tense of "eat"?

9) What is the German word for "no"?

Hey friends, I might be able to expense a replacement for my Google WiFi mesh routers. (That was a poor decision on my part; I shall not repeat it.)

What do you use for home networking?

Things I care about, in descending order of importance:

1. WiFi mesh that goes through concrete and steel
2. an Ethernet port or 2 on each mesh repeater
3. sensible security, i.e. not exposing shit to the WAN
4. a web interface for configuration (not a phone app)
5. configurable DNS
6. multiple isolated virtual networks
7. not made by EvilCorp™
8. at-a-glance traffic monitoring, or SNMP support (or similar)
9. IPv6 internal networking

Maybe we need Software: Open, Reproducibly-Built, Editable, Tested.

SORBET, not SOUP.

Perhaps it’s a good slogan for Nix. 😜
