Seems to be quite easy to trigger, just scroll around a bit (and happens both in LibreWolf and Vivaldi, even if I disable add-ons).

@jerry Looks like there's something wrong with current version of mastodon/glitch – I keep getting this error:

RIP.

IRBs are a vital mechanism for ensuring that research has respect for persons and avoids causing harm.

But they are woefully unprepared for dealing with CS research.

Folks at Stanford and Google ran an experiment where the basically A/B tested car congestion in cities by tweaking the routing weights in Google Maps. Without informing anyone, and without consent.

Now: their results are cool! They do suggest that this can be a good way to ease automobile traffic! It can save time and emissions!

But check out this part of the paper:

"The study protocol and data use were reviewed by the Stanford University Institutional Review Board (IRB). Based on the analysis involving exclusively non-identifiable data, the IRB determined that this work does not meet the definition of research involving human subjects as defined in 45 CFR 46.102 or 21 CFR 50.3, and therefore did not require formal IRB review."

What are we even doing here if changing the traffic patterns of entire cities does not have "human subjects"

Oh my god, these are real, actual slides from a SoftBank presentation. Pulitzer-worthy

Early American Chinese restaurant menus were designed to be parsed as SQL.

Some years ago, I needed to get an visa for urgent travel to China, a process that required me to fly down to SF and stand in a very long line at the Chinese consulate. When I finally handed the woman there my forms, she promptly stamped them and said "you need to take these to Window 2", pointing around the corner. So I walked around the corner...

...where *the same woman* swiveled her chair around and proceeded to check the stamp that she had just applied.

I would have been annoyed if I wasn't in so much awe at discovering the purest form of bureaucracy.

Sometimes you can really tell a Wikipedia article is gonna be good from the table of contents.

Lool, on r/LegalAdviceUK someone is fighting with tesco to get the berry offer on bananas

A cursed feature of C in 1972: Labels and functions were reassignable (i.e., lvalues)!

For example, this is a clever way to initialize once:

goto init;
init:
ouptr = oubuf;
init = init1;
init1:

which is compiled to:

jmp *4120
mov 4136,4144
mov 4122,4120

Note the indirect jump and assignment to that address. All gotos used indirect jumps. This apparently would have also worked with functions.

Hey, @cR0w, another ../ for you: https://vuldb.com/cve/CVE-2026-40342

@itgrrl @ricci also, this reminds me of a story I recently learned about and had been meaning to post about. Did you know that Margaret Hamilton used to bring her daughter to the lab when she was working nights and weekends, and let her play with the AGC simulator?

Her daughter crashed the simulator by accidentally invoking program 01 and resetting the guidance system to believe it was back on the launch pad.

Hamilton felt that was a pretty serious bug but was told "no, there's no way a trained astronaut would accidentally do that."

A trained astronaut did, in fact, do precisely that while Apollo 8 was on the way back from the moon.

She was allowed to fix it for Apollo 9.

@ocean @alice my wife @irene is allergic to cats, but she went to the UW allergy clinic and the attending there told her "don't let allergies define your life, no one has ever overdosed on non-drowsy antihistamines"

...and now we have four cats.

@ariadne many years ago, I trained a Markov model on a decade or two of my IRC utterances to see if I could get it to replace me.

Now I'm realizing I could have described that as an early AI agent and run off with a huge pile of VC money.

@noracodes I've done a survey of how many did:web accounts are in active use (73) , and how many users appear to have control of the rotation keys for their atproto accounts (0.0036%)

Here's the document release you were waiting for today!

The UNIX V4 tape!

https://archive.org/details/utah_unix_v4_raw

Credits:

* Jay Lepreau for holding on to this tape
* Aleksander Maricq for finding it
* Jon Duerig for driving it to the Computer History Museum
* Thalia Archibald for doing a huge amount of research into the tape, its history, and file formats, and the upload
* Al Kossow for the tape-reading equipment and doing the actual read
* Len Shustek for the lab where the read was done and the software used to decode it

#retrocomputing

Apparently the entire UNIX v4 tape was read successfully, what's going to need to happen next is to decode the signal from it, decipher the file formats, etc., I'll post updates as I get them
