Running a CSS workshop next week in Melbourne for any ladies, (cis, trans or anywhere in between) who would like to learn the basics. No experience or fancy set up required.

Drop-In Time is a time where I hang out in a room at the library with a big table and a lot of chairs and help people with their technology problems for two and a half hours. These are their stories. It was cold today so I was warming up some water for tea and by the time I got upstairs at three past the hour there were four people waiting for me. Whoops!

Bob and Kathy had a Medicare prescription drug plan that wasn't going to be around next year so they needed help finding a new one.

Not sure it could be more brutal, the direct erasure of the natural world for the proprietary and digital. Not to mention done by a corporation in service to a foreign superpower.

Apparently another 150,000 more trees were felled at their Otanmäki site. Both for AI data-centers.

The wood from neither site can be sold, as they were cut down illegally, and to rub it in, Google stripped the top soil of both sites. Totally denuded the land.

While I have a lot of love for the clarity of resistance in the veins of „No demands. Just fire!“ I am personally even more inspired by scenarios of hope.

This is why - to me - thinking about what role technology could play in post-capitalist societies is an integral part of resistance against "AI" and data centers.

That's why I am happy that "Digitale Solidarität", the book I wrote together with @alineblankertz, has a whole chapter about possible futures.

If you haven't seen the Abdul El-Sayed confrontation with a far-right Christian supremacist who tried to paint him as a Muslim terrorist, it's absolutely worth your time.

Be sure to watch all the way to the end for the climax of the argument, and to see Tommy slink away in shame.

And in case you were wondering, Tommy is a professional evangelical Republican activist, and a former employee of Christian supremacist Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.)

Folkx, let's join! #melbourne #naarm #ai #australia

I'm involved in this intriguing event.

https://events.humanitix.com/the-energy-to-network-to-provoke-change

It's a dinner event, this friday night in #Naarm that poses the question "What does meaningful connectivity mean to me?"

We'll be learning about how Jenny Faser, a Migunburri artist and chef, practices relationality and connection, and the evening will have a bit of a connection to native bush foods.

I'll be one of several short speakers, provoking some thoughts on this question from different angles (mine from a technology angle, no surprises there) and then we'll have discussions over dinner.

Probably still some spaces if you're keen to come along. I'm not really looking for boosts on this one, this is more directed at my immediate networks.

I've been trying to wrap up a long-gestating blog post about sysops reusing/remixing old public domain ANSI art ... and today I got sidetracked again, learning of an artist I hadn't heard of before.

Her name was Violet Stymacks. She drew and gave away BBS welcome screens from 1990-95. She signed her pieces "vs".

She has a 16colors page at https://16colo.rs/artist/vs, but it only shows 134 pieces. She drew WAY more than that. I have located 1,100+ !

Unfortunately, she died in 1995.

In the #LoResMesh project, we've just shipped a lightweight wrapper for #Kiwix that connects it to our #P2P network powered by #P2Panda.

What that means is that each of our community servers can host important website archives, and you can also search for archives that are at other nearby servers, allowing you to click through (if the internet is up), or physically go there 🚴 if the internet is down 🔥 ⛈️.

Here's our write up:

We'd love to hear what you think @kiwix.

My heart.
I was so psyched this book was finally out, I raced to the bookshop. Then I dared not read it, afraid it might disappoint (sometimes, high expectations do suck). Then I dived in and WOW. Halfway through I don't want to continue, because I do not want this story to end!

If you're going to read this book, and I wholeheartedly suggest you do, make sure to read the acknowledgements as well. Nothing but love for Becky ❤️

Progress is being made on @mosscap, the friendly #RailsFork!

We have just merged successful independently running CI configurations for the forked `mosscap-support`, `mosscap-http` (ex actionpack), `mosscap-model` and `mosscap-view` gems. So, now everything is green, we can really start working on those at pace. 🎉

`mosscap-record` needs eyes fresher than mine on a bad MySQL config, but that just leaves us with `mosscap-core` (ex railties), which is the trickiest one.

They're going to kill us all to build a beach resort.

Forget billionaire algorithms, use RSS. Most sites have them.

Both the Thimbleweed Park Blog and Grumpy Gamer do. Full text feeds.

I've been using and serving RSS since 2005.

All the cool kids are doing it.

These incredible character cards were made by Lucy Bellwood for my new novel A WALL IS ALSO A ROAD. They show Gardenpath, a cellular slime mold from beyond the galaxy, with their friend Murtis from ancient Pompeii and their friend Oriel from back home.

Intrigued? I'm on book tour, so you can see me on 10/14 in Boston at Brookline Booksmith at 7pm or on 10/15 at Phoenix Books in Burlington VT, also at 7pm. Hope to see you there!

Breaking News!
Code Yikes!

Global total column precipitable water just set a new record high for the month of September.

Upshot? More droughts. More floods.
