Finally, a good use case for an LLM: sort brute force search phrases by likelihood, in order to finally lay to rest one stupid conspiracy theory. I think @filippo had some bounty for this?
The outcome of California's prop 40 seems to be either we get more healthcare or all the billionaires leave the state and I am okay with either outcome.
financial markets' faith in post-Volckerism is absolutely extraordinary. no matter how badly the United States is mismanaged, its mismanagement becomes dollar strength on the theory the Fed will more than compensate USD holders for the mess with higher interest rates.
The rename from "dark patterns" to "deceptive patterns" matters more than it sounds. Naming the harm instead of the aesthetic makes it clear it is a trust problem.
Today is FORTRAN’s 70th birthday; its reference manual “appeared in a glossy cover, handsomely printed, with the date October 15, 1956.” https://softwarepreservation.computerhistory.org/FORTRAN/paper/p25-backus.pdf
(The actual software wasn’t released till the following year)
No longer fashionable but still, one of computer programming’s biggest success stories. I tip my hat.
As Fernando Quintana (Guardian letters) says:
'A country that cannot afford to lose its billionaires should ask itself why it can apparently afford to impoverish everyone else'!
Currently, hundreds of GW of residential solar power are controlled by terribly insecure & unregulated clouds owned by companies continents away. This problem is well known & could take down the whole European energy grid. We just had a conference about it, and still nothing is happening. Here's my writeup: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/solar-nightmare-at-the-conference/ #ENISA #NIS2 #CRA
Today the @NRC reports that the Dutch police confiscated a server allegedly used by the Italian antifascist network #autisticiinventati
The Dutch police acted upon a request from the US government.
The server was hosted in a data center right next to our university building.
It is hard to overestimate the political significance of this intervention.
#DigitalSovereignty was never more important.

It turns out that the best way to avoid being killed by drivers is to be protected by infrastructure.

I VEHEMENTLY reject the idea that it would ever be legitimate to exclude trans women from a woman's group or women's bathroom or whatever because of someone's trauma around men.
That sort of rhetoric has been weaponized against minorities for years to justify their exclusion. "I'm afraid of lesbians". "I'm afraid of Black people". "I'm afraid of Muslims." "I'm afraid of Jewish people." "I'm afraid of lower class people". Etc.
I'm beyond done with being accommodating of white women tears to drive trans women away because of "fears of men". Trauma is real, and we should be aware of it, and accommodate it where possible , but wielding your trauma to exclude vulnerable minorities from public spaces is some hot garbage.
People who find LLMs useful when "used correctly" don’t understand that they manage to use them correctly because they spent 20 years of there life learning their craft without LLMs.
LLMs is the only tool for which the less you use it, the better you become at using it.

South Korea went from burying almost all its food waste to recycling almost all of it. In 1997, 95.4% went to landfill. Today about 95% is recycled, after a 2005 landfill ban, separate collection and pay-by-weight bins that cut Seoul’s daily food waste by nearly a quarter. The Korean Zero Waste Movement Network, a coalition of more than 180 groups, campaigned for four decades and is now an Earthshot Prize finalist. Hi folks, if you are maintaining a widely used #OpenSource infrastructure project (think networking, encryption, testing/QA automation, desktop libraries, payment libraries ...) now is a good time to ask for a security audit or other support through the Sovereign Tech Resilience program.
The basic idea is: you apply (quick process), and we pair you with a partner firm from our network. We help with the scoping and pay the bill for the partner.
This is _not_ money for maintainers -- we have other programs for that -- but it does translate in free access to services for you.
Please take a look at the full services provided and consider if some of them could make sense for you. Happy to answer questions.

A gentle reminder that unsourced news stories are usually bullshit, even when they play to your biases about the Nazis all being Russian bots.
🔴🟢 Today, we launched https://gdpr-omnibus.eu/ – a website, where we ranked more than 1,000 amendments to the GDPR and ePrivacy Directive.
⁉️ This sheds light on the question of who in the EU Parliament is fighting for your privacy, and who is fighting for Big Tech!
👉 Take a look at https://gdpr-omnibus.eu/ to see the full ranking and our special rankings, including one on Charter violations.

I do not design spacecraft, but a number of these apply more broadly.
