Picard ethics tip: Before undertaking a mission, it is our moral imperative to consider any obvious negative ramifications.

Looking for software engineering jobs? My current employer is hiring for a variety of roles (some of them in NYC and some remote). Requirements and salary ranges in each post. For the remote roles it doesn’t hurt to apply even if you are not in the US (there are a handful of Canadians working here)

Many people I like and respect are on Twitter, but Musk’s appalling, ongoing use of his own platform to spread hate is the single biggest reason why I won’t be actively participating anytime soon, and find it bizarre that people of good will do.

@kevlin and part of the situation is that organisations are packed with people (including technical) who’ve never seen a good pair of boots, nor has anyone they know. They’re making the wrong trade offs because they literally don’t know what they’re missing.

What’s your native language? (Hypothesis: There are many French & German speakers in the Fediverse.)

:fediverse: Boosts appreciated!

(If you have more than one native language then check the one that you speak better and/or the one that is listed below.)

Barry Scannell's quote re: #Anthropic executives' annoyance re: “user cruelty” toward “Claude”: “You can't be cruel to numbers & maths”. 💯!

Frankly, Anthropic is cruel to its users b/c their system constantly uses 1ˢᵗ-person pronouns & anthropomorphizes itself (particularly with sycophantic responses designed to trick the user into liking the system).

Has anyone else tried to stop these types of outputs by #Claude? I've tried hard yet they remain.

When the reckoning of this era finally happens, we must remember to hold accountable all those with power to resist yet chose not to.

I read some post about how Mastodon consists primarily of German-speaking creatures talking in English. I'm gonna do a poll, need to test that. Boosts highy appreciated!

So, do you speak German?

X is bad, though: https://lexontech.org/x-is-bad-though

If we want to regulate AI, why not start with a simple ban on LLMs using "I"?

Easy to build, easy to verify and deflates a hype while still allowing people to use chatbots (so no one can claim we are limiting anything)

My latest for @volkskrant in English!

This is a fair question to ask. Why Russia and not Canada?

PSA: If you have upgraded to MacOS 27 and have an annoying SiriAI button over all sorts of your text inputs:

sudo mkdir -p /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/WritingTools LightweightUI_macOS -dict Enabled -bool false

will disable it. Requires a reboot.

This pathetic fucker can't handle the idea that Ukraine's president is 1000x the leader he is. He's rather suck Putin's dick than admit he's fucked up American foreign policy and the global economy for the next 50 years due to his own ego.

“Billionaires, “ the teacher said “were a cognitohazard of the late dirt ages. In that time it was normal to force humans to perform labour for four to five decades before being permitted a period of limited rest known as retirement. The billionaire class found ways to steal even the limited resources remaining to retired victims for themselves.”

A hand went up. “Miss, why did they do it?”

“You can ask; today we will meet one of these ancient monsters”

A nervous titter. “A simulation—right?”

“Oh no, a corpsicle. After the Reset they were frozen and periodically reanimated to remind us all never again. Everyone take a stick from the rack and make sure it is sharp.”

Many years ago I used to work on a Cobol-based application that ran over an 80x25 green screen terminal. People running 30 or 40 users on a 486 PC running SCO Unix hooked up to a multi-port serial card.

We'd never have tolerated the amount of waiting between actions or screens that is now considered absolutely normal on web-based cloud-hosted applications.

Weird how things change.
