    "One reason why plastics are so widely used in society is that they’re supposed to be chemically inert under normal circumstances. The researchers’ experiments, however, indicate that this assumption doesn’t hold true once plastics are broken down into the tiny pieces that can enter our bodies. Specifically, they found that microplastics are capable of spontaneously generating unstable molecules known as free radicals when in the presence of water."

    @gwynnion let me guess. by "possibly overlooked" we're gonna find out it was "deliberately suppressed for decades by already infinitely rich cunts"

    @gwynnion
    Ya'know - a lifetime of hearing about how modern society is built on 'possibly overlooked mechanisms' - be it legal loopholes "found" by billionaires or engineering flaws that helped companies profit, to unexamined toxins & chemicals that were never properly tested - it really feels like people and the environment were just always expendable in the eyes of the wealthy and powerful, right?

    @gwynnion Back in the 1980s maybe 90s it was proven that plastics released oestrogen into the environment . Alligators in north america had penises to small to be able reproduce, because of the oestrogen in the water . I am an optimist , Gobble warming , at the same time we are 4 years in to a grand solar minimum ( last time was 2600 years ago , they happen ) nowt to do with the earth just what the sun does . Still the biggest problem is no fuckin Guillotines .

    The microplastics thing is to late to stop .
