Tempted to move my storage server over to NetBSD for funsies, but it looks like it doesn't support ZFS encryption? Currently I'm running ZFS-over-LUKS and I'd sure love to move to standard OpenZFS-style encryption.
@cliffle by chance we are just discussing this and you're kinda right https://queer.hacktivis.me/objects/fe21714f-acec-431c-a958-bdfcd6ae3697
@dysfun ah well. Maybe I try FreeBSD in the meantime. I haven't seriously used FreeBSD in almost 25 years.
@cliffle freebsd should be ozfs now afaia.
@dysfun so it appears! I'm really just after OpenZFS, the OS is kind of an implementation detail and will probably change again.
@Unlikelylass @cliffle to be clear, netbsd supports zfs. it just doesn't support up to date openzfs
@Unlikelylass @dysfun I mean, NetBSD does have ZFS support... just not _recent_ ZFS support. It's an older fork.
But that may be basically equivalent to "no ZFS support" depending on what you're doing (I think it is for me)
@Unlikelylass @cliffle @MaddieM4 i don't think it is. but the installer is... well i think it could use some love.
@dysfun @Unlikelylass my sense is that ZFS _root_ on NetBSD is unusual.
But I don't use ZFS root, in part because it makes it easier to treat my OS as a disposable component. :-)
@cliffle @Unlikelylass ZFS root is most definitely not supported in the installer. and i've had mixed reports about people getting it working by the manual instructions.
Oct 16, 2026, 4:37 PM@dysfun @cliffle @Unlikelylass the bootloader doesn’t support zfs, so the ways to get a zfs “root” involve booting into an mfs or ffs mini-root then chrooting to your zfs once it’s mounted, afaict
