Happy Monday to our mastodon family. After a devastating drought, there are some crops that remained standing when we had given up . This is not what we expected to come out our hard work but it has given us a huge reason to try again over and over. What is the biggest challenge that you have faced with gardening.

A tomato plant that stayed up during the dry season with tomato fruits on it .

I doubt that it compares to your experience, but here I've found that after this stupid hot summer the plants that survived have really started to take off now the weather cooled down. I'm shovelling on compost so it'll get integrated to hold more water next year.
    Are you guys making compost?

Shade cloth also helped a lot. Next year I'm going to grow beans for shade instead of artificial cloth.

But I also lost a lot. I realised I need to grow warmer weather crops - cabbage ain't the best for 35C! Next year peppers, tomatoes etc. And have seedlings ready to go in immediately the temperature drops to make the most of the autumn.

I appreciate you sharing about your experience . We make a lot of compost and use it as fertilizers for all the crops we grow.
Growing beans is as well a good plan because they're legumes which attract nitrogen fixing bacteria into your soil and you'll have plenty of nitrogen. However on our side, we plan on having a permanent water source such that we can be able to grow all kinds of crops despite the season. Wouldn't that work for you as well ?

I have a tap and some water barrels which collect rain from the roof. Without that nothing would have survived! I was even watering the apple tree. What's your watering situation now??

I can see when I water the difference between compost and soil. On compost the water just drains in, whereas on soil the water stands for a long time, so it would act as a sponge.
