@inquiline the rule is that you get to feel superior to US racism if your country did not participate in the transatlantic slave trade. So Poles and Swedes get to do it, Brits and Spaniards do not

@julieofthespirits @inquiline Let's be clear, Polish and Swedish traders were very much involved in the slave trade, as well as later colonial ventures. Not to speak of all the other economic ties that bind European countries to slave trade and colonialism (also there is the whole story of the treatment of Sami people in Sweden). I don't think there is a European country that can claim innocence.

@julieofthespirits @inquiline it’s complicated, Poland was also a victim of colonialism in the 19th century. I do get and agree in general with your point, it’s just that there are several European countries right now that are starting to deal with their complicity despite not being „officially“ involved (Switzerland is a prominent example) while also experiencing a backlash

@julieofthespirits @inquiline Even during partition, a not insignificant number of Polish people ventured into the colonies and took part. Joseph Conrad is a prominent but by far not the only example. (Sorry if this is too much, and it goes beyond the topic of conversation. I have family in Poland and so the story of Polish people in Africa is a bit of an obsession of mine)

@inquiline oh there's so many more. I have a bibliography somewhere. Bill Schwarz, A White Man's World, is a classic about British settler colonialism

@inquiline these are good ones, also if you want a single fact that sums up a lot, France still effectively controls monetary policy in a lot of its old African colonies, in part by forcing them to invest half of their national reserves in France:

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CFA_franc

There are many more flows of colonial wealth to European nations that continue to this day, but this is one of the more explicit ones. So if you've ever wondered why African colonized nations seem to be "developing" forever with no end in sight, the answer is because most of the profits from their natural resources flow outward back to Europe, plus they're saddled with endless debt through the IMF, etc. Colonialism is very much not over today.

@inquiline bit weird mentioning British. The UK is, and always has been, in Europe.

@EF But not nearly as weird as it is to come in to a stranger's very good point just to nitpick.

And this particular nit, the extent to which Britain is or is not "Europe," has defined the last decade (and no doubt the next few) of the UK. So it's very bizarre for you to state this as a bland fact when it's anything but.

In conclusion, there was no need for you to say this and it brings no benefit to anyone. And yet you called it necessary! And you're calling other people a bit weird. Wow.

@bright_helpings whether the UL is part of the EU has defined the past 10 years. Geography defines it as European.

The point where stating facts and discussion are supressed is such a negative on humainty. The other person was dismissive then abusive, yet somehow that I am the problem is odd to me.

Then instead of blocking me, boosted the posts and now random people messging with trite critcisms is rather strange. But hey ho.

@EF "Geography says so" lol. The social construction of nations never mind geography is just such a weird thing to treat as objective fact!

It's so weird that you complain about the person "suppressing facts and discussion" but also you're unhappy you got boosted?

Your behavior fits into an age-old pattern of dismissing racism by focusing on pedantic details that detract from the point. You caused this problem, your actions have consequences which is people telling you you're acting foolish.

@bright_helpings you know nothing about me. The boosting appears to solely get groupies to attack someone on the Internet whilst continuing to openly attack a person. So the inverse.

@EF I am only commenting on your behavior as you have chosen to share it here, not you as a person.

Isn't that what social media is ahout? Isn't that what you wanted when you had to tell a stranger a fact about geography?
