a little concerned to see news from Spain that the Supreme Court has suspended voting rights of citizens (like me and my children) who obtained citizenship through their spanish born parents and grandparents.

It is extremely unusual for a citizen not to have the right to vote in general. It goes against Spain's constitution.

Of course this question to the Court was put forward by Vox, the far right conservative party.

it will have to be resolved before the elections. It would be unprecedented in Europe in post war, post Franco, times for a class of citizens to be excluded from voting.

Either they restore the right by clarifying the law, or they strip us of our citizenship completely.

I just can't imagine there would be wide domestic political support for disenfranchising millions of people who have clearly declared their intention and desire to be reconnected with Spain.

our family has built a lot of future plans around our spanish and EU citizenship. A change like this would be deeply disappointing.

@chris there are quite a few things lately, some by judges and Supreme Court, that have me very concerned Spain could turn down the far right path very soon.

@obrien_kat @chris I'm terrified of a far right government, everything points in that direction.

In the meantime, the President of the Supreme Court is protesting against judges being accused of politicising the justice system. Oh, let's see: it took months to put a stop to this because it’s in their interests, a year to convict the Attorney General and the President’s brother, yet we still don’t know who the M. Rajoy that appeared in Bárcenas’s records is, after 13+ years.

@chris Should all citizens be allowed to vote? Yes.

Should people born abroad from parents born in Spain auomatically get Spanish citizensip? yes.

But not sure people born from parents not born in Spain should inherit citizenship. May be get easier application process if they intend to move to Spain. There needs to be a limit on how far down generations inherit citizenship.

@jfmezei the limit is grandparents. i recognize that immigration laws change all the time, flowing back and forth, but the fact this came up not because of the gnerational limits but more because of the partisan interests of one party worried a new citizen might not vote in their favour is the biggest issue here

@chris I am flaberghasted on why the Supreme court would make a decision to allow a government to decide which citizens are allowed to vote. Government can decide who can and can't be citizen (except those born in the coutry where citizenship must be granted (as per UN charter). But once someone is a citizen, the right to vote shoudl not be interfered with.

Is this a actual removal of your right to vote or removal of vote by mail, requiring you to fly to nearest consulate/embassy to vote?

@chris yup, you're the thin edge of the wedge. Next they strip voting from immigrants, then from their children, then they strip their citizenship, then they are deported. It's Vox's campaign platform, and the EPP is 100% on board (Vox and PP are cooperating on candidatures).

I'm not counting on the ECJ, they'll tut-tut about competences and deliver a regretful ruling in 2037.

I'm certainly not placing any hope in the @EUCommission and I'm curious as to where (and whether) I will be next year.
