Aug 19, 2026, 3:23 PMMy take on a link to a random post with only HTML/CSS
Chris Coyier recently posted about creating a "random post" link on a site that would link to a different URL using only HTML/CSS: A Button That Links to a Random Post in HTML & CSS Only . Here's my take on that.
Aug 19, 2026, 4:45 PM@Kilian disappointingly, I had a fun idea for this trick: have all the links stacked up and then have them scroll up and down really fast inside a small window, like a reel on a one-arm-bandit fruit machine. but sadly, if a link is moving really fast past the pointer when you click, the browser has a habit of missing the link click and counting it as a click on the thing underneath! https://jsbin.com/xepagaj/1/edit?html,css,js,output demonstrates. So much for that fun idea...
Aug 19, 2026, 4:47 PM@sil maybe something with stepped animations and/or scroll snapping would fix that?
Aug 19, 2026, 4:49 PM@Kilian ooh, I didn't think of steps()!
i did think of scroll snapping, it's just that whenever I try to get it to work it takes me ages :)
Aug 19, 2026, 6:17 PM@Kilian I have now tried steps and still no :) nice idea though!
