Every long-lived website ends up with cobwebs. 🕸️
Things that used to do something, but no longer do. Like httpequiv for IE8-10, your fb:pages id or the Windows 8 tile tags. None of them do anything anymore.
But which ones can you safely get rid of? The next version of Polypane will tell you!
I’d like to have a universal pseudo selector in CSS
Last week, I wasted about an hour of my time figuring out why a certain element had different dimensions than the same element elsewhere in the DOM. It had the same CSS and the same defined width and height, but it still rendered differently.
The accessibility AI slop takeover of LinkedIn needs to be studied.
And with studied, I mean utterly erased with all the perpetrators driven out of accessibility discourse.

The root scroller in your browser (the one scrolling the viewport) is special, but it's really easy to accidentally create a new scroll container.
Learn how those nested scroll containers break scroll restoration, mobile browser UI and more, plus how to avoid them.

My take on a link to a random post with only HTML/CSS
Chris Coyier recently posted about creating a "random post" link on a site that would link to a different URL using only HTML/CSS: A Button That Links to a Random Post in HTML & CSS Only . Here's my take on that.
Fix contrast automatically makes text readable on sites that have low-contrast text.
I've updated it to use a much faster algorithm to go over all contrast pairs, and it's now instant even on large websites.
Download for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Vivaldi, Opera etc:
Polypane's helper extension got a new update, adding even more options to help move your workflow over to Polypane.
Configure any domain to get a button, full page overlay or let it automatically forward pages to Polypane.
Available for all the browsers. Links here: https://polypane.app/docs/helper-extension-for-other-browsers/
This is a very interesting proposal: set CSS custom properties for external documents through the link. So your SVGs could have an 'API':
In HTML:
<img src="image.svg#param(--accent,#F60)">
Or CSS:
img {
link-parameters: param(--accent, #F60);
}
Then in your SVG you'd use it like
<path fill="env(--accent)" ... />
I've been experimenting with CSS´s upcoming random() function to see what it can do. In the mean time I found a few browser crashes and a way to implement random-item() before it actually lands.

Safe-area-inset lets you make the most use of device screens, even with their pesky notches, holes or islands that get in the way.
Check out my latest interactive deep dive to learn how to use safe-area-insets, what to use them for, and the best way to test them on desktop.

I make good use of the Intl API in Polypane and on its website, so it was high time I did a Polypane-style deep-dive on it.

I first learned about this parable from Bluey (because of course) and with both all the hype and all the gloom in our field lately, it helps to put things in perspective. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_old_man_lost_his_horse

Understanding the fundamentals of CSS layout
When devs say that CSS is hard, they're usually talking about CSS layout. What often gets omitted is that developers are assumed to understand and effectively use CSS without being taught how it works in the first place.
