"The reason to care about the destiny of technology and our civilization is not merely because getting it wrong will be terrible but also because getting it right will be amazing. There is so much more at stake than averting apocalypse. There is ushering in utopia."

Hmm. Since I've been hearing about such a nirvana through technology since the PC was in it's infancy, I am skeptical.
@jrredho @pluralistic @rysiek Being skeptical is good. Inspiration is a direction, a vector, not a destination. Just the belief that we can make things better.

Scepticism is healthy. As Walkaway demonstrates, walking away is not a "fix once, enjoy forever" solution. It's an ongoing fight.
Those who made their fortunes by mining* our social networks, are not willing to give up that which they believe they so richly deserve, and it's insanely hard to walk away from a platform where you've been hanging out with old friends and making new ones. 1/3

However, my first steps into social media, way back before the web was built, was through FIDONET, Usenet and IRC - distributed platforms run by enthusiasts, sometimes on company time. Mastodon as a social construct has much in common with those ancient platforms. And come to think of it, the early web was much the same: An unruly network of web pages that interlinked into infinity. 2/3

Keep social media socially anchored... Walk away from those who want to mine them for money. 3/3
*) Interesting how someone who inherited the fortune of an actually mining company owner has been using that fortune to mine others' companies for value, believing that he is entitled to this, as he is rich and smart.
Dec 19, 2022, 2:31 PM@Rockbear to be fair, he doesn't seem any good at it.
@rysiek @jrredho @paurea @pluralistic no, and that may come as a surprise to him, if he ever realizes it. For now, it's everybody else's fault. Capitalism is good when you're winning.
