Quick question: what are things that you would consider software barriers or impediments that make your life as a user more difficult or frustrating? (Again, as a *user*). I'm taking notes for something I'm writing and I'd like to gather as many examples as I can.
This is a very good video about the unwarranted trust people quickly give to LLMs.
From a channel that doesn’t even have 100 subscribers!
@baldur Social interactions tend to be easier for me, that’s probably the only difference. But as for the rest, I really recognised the same types of misunderstandings I’ve had with people on- and offline. The examples you make — the ‘pessimism’ and the genuine not understanding mistaken for judgement — have repeatedly happened to me as well. You can very well imagine my bafflement.
I enjoy your writing very much, and it seems disarmingly clear to me. Maybe I’m different, maybe we both are…
@baldur I just read your post, “Different modes of thinking”, and this part:
>I tend to think from the bottom-up. I gather facts, observations, ideas, and references and build up to the overall thought or idea, brick by brick, concept by concept. My understanding of pretty much anything, anywhere – work, theory, society, communications, culture – comes from this very labour-intensive process.
pretty much describes how I typically think as well.
I can’t help reading bits of it this way:
"THE CULTURE ON X TODAY IS REMARKABLY FRIENDLY AND INCLUSIVE. IT IS A CHEERFUL PLACE. IF YOU BELIEVE THE WORLD IS FALLING APART AND DOOMED ONLY TO GET WORSE, THAT OUR OBVIOUS AND REAL PROBLEMS CANNOT BE SURMOUNTED, X IS NOT THE PLATFORM FOR YOU. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! J.GRUBER”
No, John. *You* have lost your fucking mind.
Wow. I’m just— I can’t even—
Wow.
Speaking of cars (again): I can’t comprehend the current design obsession of having such small windows, especially in the rear. I know that there are cameras and sensors aiding you when parking, but still, I’d much prefer more glass real estate. The interior would also feel much less dark and claustrophobic.
The other day we had this car ahead of us. It’s a Seat 124 (aka Fiat 124, ВАЗ-2101, Lada 1200 etc.). You may dislike its boxy, 'dated' looks, but look at the windows! It's a greenhouse!
…and also interconnects them. The example he made was the synergy between a device like a camcorder and an application like iMovie.
But, like many other things tech touches, this had to morph into an ‘ecosystem’ where for all the things you want to do with satellite devices, now you can use an Apple device. Convenient, sure, but then this companies want more and more out of it, they want to be present everywhere you look, with everything you use in your personal spaces.

According to Gurman, at the upcoming “Welcome Home” event, Apple will announce smart home stuff like a doorbell, a lock, and a thermostat.
For the past few years, tech has progressively filled me with different types of ‘fatigue’.
Now I have ecosystem fatigue.
The initial ‘digital hub’ vision made a lot of sense at the time. As Jobs said, the Mac with its capabilities gives value to all the satellite devices we use(d): CD and DVD players, digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players, camcorders…

Revisiting Stevie Wonder’s past catalogue is basically looking at a list of the albums, closing my eyes, and pointing randomly — and it’s going to be good.
And it IS good, because the first album was “Songs in the Key of Life” (1976)
“…firmly stating that AI does not possess a soul, feelings, or a moral conscience”
Just like everyone in the AI industry. 😏 https://mastodon.social/@nixCraft/117372672187422692
@hdv Bedankt for the follow. I’m flattered to be followed by someone with such a fascinating bio. Cheers!
I hadn’t played “The Long Dark” in a while. It’s nice to see this as the very first disclaimer you’re shown when the game loads.
I’ve always appreciated Hinterland. Now even more.
Also, “Chappelle’s Show” at №58 but "Halt and Catch Fire" at №96!?!? What fucker assembled this list!?! https://mastodon.online/@nikitonsky/117332415685291590
The world didn’t end in December 2012.
But that’s when the timeline shifted and we didn’t realise.
It’s been a month since I forcefully shifted my circadian rhythms, because going to bed at 5:30 AM and getting up at 12 PM was, frankly, messing with the household’s routine. Now I’m going to bed at 2:30-2:45 AM and getting up at 9:30 AM.
I still feel jet-lagged. And I’m drinking more coffee than before, in the morning. Compromises, I guess.
You know what makes my blood boil? That there are people who dismiss the possibility of a future pandemic threatening life on the planet (despite having COVID as a verifiable precedent), who still don’t believe in climate change (despite the mountain of data, the ACTUAL change in climate, and disruption of weather patterns we are experiencing these past years), but when a bunch of idiots come and say, “OOOH AI WILL KILL US ALL BY 2030! IT’S A POSSIBILITY!”, people just eat this shit up.
I was watching the CBS News interview with Coxon, and I can’t believe the amount of bullshit coming out of this guy’s mouth. When asked how, practically, the AI will proceed to kill us all, the nutshell of his response was: “It will be, like, something out of science fiction, that only people who aren’t tech-savvy can fully grasp.”
Right, because tech-savvy people can see right through your nonsense.
I can’t comprehend how people can take him seriously.

This is lovely. Fuck tech. I could spend an inordinate amount of money _here._
