    THE GAMEPLAYERS OF ZAN (1976)
    Acrylic - 28” x 22”

An unusual aspect of this assignment was that the author told Donald Wollheim what scene should appear on the cover. My task, then, was to paint “a mental image of a woman revolving in blue boxes over an infinite control panel with a star pattern all around her.” 1/2

A woman floats with ethereal grace over a massive control panel lit with a rainbow of smaller displays and buttons. Immediately behind her, a series of boxes rotates to form a t-shape. The blue cubes are set against a descending oval of flat black that dominates the top half of the painting. Just above the control panel, the background is filled with a cosmically clouded field of stars, a vivid range of blues accented with purple. Thin black lines radiate downward from the oval to the control panel, perhaps divisions in a grand viewport. The woman's face is captured in profile. Her arms are thrown out wide, giving her figure a sense of weightless motion. Her gown is pure 70s science fiction wardrobe with exaggerated collar and bell shaped sleeves. Stars bleed through from the background in the shadows of her dress.
