I haven’t been able to get a pilot’s license because of a med I take, but now I’m told there’s a loophole - become a furry, and the democrats will put you in the cockpit of a passenger jet

So, I have a lovely new iPad mini. Not so lovely: migrating my account has been really slow, everything's sluggish, apps not loading … after hours of this I *FINALLY* noticed that iOS has prioritised downloading my ENTIRE photo library—all 19 years of it—rather than, say, my VPN, adblockers, password manager, or LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE I ACTUALLY USE ALL THE TIME.
@cstross Slava Ukraine! So I'd try one.
We actually have the weirdest beers here:
The oyster one is actually made with oysters. The Saturday Morning is made with marshmallows. Moody tongue costs 120 dollars a bottle and really is made with truffles. Barf.
@cstross
That's why you shouldn't call it AI but "AI" OR LLMs.
There's little inteligence, it's mostly archived knowledge (or knowledge-like data) and behavioral patterns.
If there's any inteligence, it's in the training process which determines which training data gets reproduced more.
Apart from that, it's compression like any other and once people understand that, they'll also understand why copyright should apply to it.
If you are a writer, artist, illustrator, etc. in any field (that includes you comics folks) (and you UX writers) you should take this survey about AI: https://s.surveyplanet.com/b5o4yctg
The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry by C. M. Waggoner is currently only $1.99 everywhere. Fun, cozy(ish), queer fantasy about a small-time crook becoming a bodyguard.

@cstross We all remember what happened when that one Korean elevator accidentally violated Soviet air space.
When I was young, before all lifts had GPS, you had to show your passport before boarding in case the lift went too far off-course.
That's a good pitch actually. I have one friend who reads a great deal of nonsense, particularly about the Middle East, just to keep up with the points of view expressed, and I suppose he would devour this with interest. But I've never felt that's the best use of his time.
Someone gave me a book by Thomas Friedman, which I then read. I asked him why he did that, and he apologized; apparently he was confused. As to why I read it, that's a known weakness I have when given a book.
@Uilebheist @cstross INTERCAL is why I implemented a BASIC with computed COME FROM.
@Uilebheist @cstross
If this is true, it become a global imperative to implement ALL AI in INTERCAL.
Obfuscated INTERCAL. For sanity-checking. COME FROM WOMBAT
All user interface text output to be in Antique Sanskrit, for uniform intelligibility.
@cstross They forgot about elevators having nurses to treat various effects from the speed and change of altitude, people getting nose bleeds, fainting, altitude sickness….
In fact, I saw this in my Immich library this morning while looking for something else. I saved it because I wanted to occasionally read it and remind myself that success doesn't need to be forever. Success can be simply enjoying yourself in the moment before moving on to the next thing.
By that metric, Mastodon is a success to me.
OMG: “Of all the books I have ever reviewed that purported to offer a serious thesis, this is without question the most deranged. If you are seeking a Christmas present for someone you really don’t like, give them a copy.”
