We tend to think of our big brain as the advantage, the thing that sets our species apart. But there are plenty of other smart species. Birds that solve puzzles. Insects that talk! With sign language and chemistry! How cool is that!

They seem to be pretty good at what they do, for their resource consumption.

What we do is be random, be bored, and be wrong in novel ways. That's what our big brain is for. Everything else can be done more efficiently.

We've known how to build ants for over half a century and we've trained birds for decades. They work.

Why would we want to burn the planet for a random, bored, wrong big brain.

We already have those. They suck. Aaand my boredom-suppressor has started kicking in I think, I better go back to making ants for money now.

Update: since this is getting new boosts, I thought i'll edit the post. The upcoming Mastodon version 4.5 near-completely removes the need for this addon (and in fact it may interfere with the native mechanism).

If you are already on version 4.5 (for example, if you are on mastodon.social) you don't need it and should disable it if already installed.

The extension will be officially retired once 4.5 releases.

A huge #Substitoot update is up (and rudely opens this status in a new tab!).

• Completely rewritten internals. No more blocking and no more fake statuses, everything is fetched directly to your instance one by one.
• Now showing a progress/status indicator at the bottom of the screen (when doing something).
• A number of bugs wiped out of existence along with many kilobytes of legacy code.
• Can now fetch from all omas and keys (or so I think).
• Firefox on Android can now install the addon normally (or so I think!).

I'm leaning towards making a rather basic caching proxy for public use. This will mean no IP/UA exposure to the instances but full exposure to the proxy operator (me, by default) on the pinky promise of not looking or god forbid indexing.

Still talking only about public/unlisted posts that some extension user saw on their instance.

Maybe it should be a proper fedi server itself so it can be suspended by those who hate it. Idk.

Question for instance admins. I have an idea for a new separate feature (cough algorithmic feed cough) for #Substitoot (probably, it'd sure make sense).

It would require it sending a lot more unauthenticated requests for public statuses and contexts to remote instances. Would that be a nuisance?

Apparently Google auto-approves new releases without question, but I decided to add a line in the description and now it'll probably take a few days before someone manually approves it.

Because it's fine to upload whatever code I want as long as it looks presentable, I guess.

And another one, 0.6.1!

- Now also loads the statuses in user profiles! (only the first 40 though). Unfortunately, unlike contexts, this blocks the local request, so you'll have to wait longer for anything at all to show. Which is why I waited for months before giving up and implementing it like that. And it's totally worth it.
- Fixed a couple more ID mapping bugs.
