You can’t convince people to move to a new network for ideological reasons. A few will; most won’t. The only driver is giving them something new that they want and can’t get anywhere else.

Making open clones of closed services is not a mass market strategy.

@ben I disagree a little bit. I agree that an open platform that has the same apparent features as a closed platform is not going to attract many people.

However, an "open clone" can be a starting point from which you can learn and develop something that is greater. In particular if you involve those people who choose to use your open network (or any open service) in the development of features and functionalities, this open development itself may become a market strategy.

@ben yeah we kinda see this with the move from Friendster->MySpace->Facebook. You have to collectively decide as a group to all move at once.

For me twitter was awesome because I met everyone new on there over common interests. When it blew up my friend group splintered.

Some stayed and I don’t talk to them anymore, some went to Fedi, some Bsky, some discord. Then I had to start over and make new friends.

@ben the new thing is federation and it means that the logic of "can't get it elsewhere" no longer applies. you can get the content wherever you like best
