Judge Alsup’s June 2025 ruling split the question. Training a model on lawfully purchased books was fair use, but downloading millions of books from pirate libraries and keeping them was not.

That's what the courts said when they fined Anthropic 3000 USD / book.

So where do you draw the line? I say the copyright is moot in a world of zero friction copying. We need a system which pays artists and authors. And this ain't it.

I am utterly sick of the contradiction wherein we damn AI for stealing, when the system has all of them up on charges and paying billions of dollars in fines for doing exactly that. Anthropic paid a 1.5 billion USD fine.

But Aaron Swartz is a special case, where his intent was good and that excuses him. And it does excuse him in my book. It's just a contradiction I see and cannot wrap my head around

@bagder We got sent 300+ low-quality "reports" by a single user using an AI tool (which they wrote, I presume) yesterday.

A DOS of the team, where the "reporter" didn't even check what that tool found — some of it easy to refuse, others not. And then they complain when we ask to back the findings up…
