I think another thing is that engineers tend to be abstract thinkers in a way that doesn't lend itself to a great deal of awareness of the world around them, while artists are abstract thinkers in a way that tends to connect them to the world around them on a deeper level.

Again, it's not absolutes, just general trends.

Also, artists tend to be poor, and poor people tend to know what's what, while well-paid professionals with their picket fences can afford all kinds of delusions about the world around them, and their role in it.

I'm not hating on engineers, though. I'm a very engineering-minded person, even though I didn't go into that field. I like engineers.

But we're not the most conscientious bunch. Not by a long shot.

One of many things that's irksome about "are LLMs conscious" discourse is that humans are by and large fucking awful at telling what is and isn't conscious.

People got vibesick over ELIZA for fuck's sake! A lot of people playing Portal got broken up over melting down the Weighted Companion Cube, which is categorically inert even in the plot of the game.

At the same time, a lot of folks reject the humanity of neurodiverse people or people of color. We plain suck at determining consciousness.

Mastodon 5.x apparently hides the 'warning' button in a submenu. Please fix this..

IMO Content Note should be an optional default-empty [Title] box that is always there.

I follow NSFW. There is a box saying 'Click for dick' pic. I want, I click, I get dick pic. Anticipation -> engagement -> reward.

Mastodon 4.x fails this, when posting:
- ! button, hazard bar, content "WARNING": implies your content is bad so must warn. As if 'good' content shouldn't have a CN; Wrong!

I will:
- Minimize slop in system
- Update some SW to newer than 2021 if I want to and cannot find LLM use
- Support Flatpak/containers, but don't prefer them: if needed, the outer OS has failed
- I want random software from the internet to Just Work, for as long as possible.

The Linux distro I am creating will be mostly free of GenAI / LLM slop, but not entirely.

Current exceptions:
- Latest OpenSSL (probs contains slop)
- Latest OpenSSH (maybe? not today, but I will take updates)
- A modern web browser (all-in-one binary from somewhere)

But that will be all. Linux stays @ 5.10.x.

Conclusion: Ya boi has some time ahead of him updating GCC, glibc and libstdc++ as far forward as possible without taking any commits tainted by GenAI.

Scrolling through endless commits and trying to convince myself GenAI was not used in their production is not fun.

But I'll do it. Eventually.

For now, I just want to get the basics sorted, so I can reboot into this system properly without feeling like I'm missing out.

So: Just use Firefox? Badger the IronFox people to build their AppImage on an older base system?

Well, the technical decisions I have made are all towards minimal maintenance, no eternal compatibility chasing, yet still being compatible with all but the most broken AppImages shipped on the web.

e.g. Avoiding musl libc; using glibc. (Based on: Void Linux. I like it and it is easy to change.)

So giving up on the IronFox AppImage as-is would mean the project has failed.

My project to compile a Linux distro mostly without GenAI (by using 2021-era sw with strategic updates (and exceptions)), compatible with random AppImages from the internet, has hit a snag:

- Old Firefox ESR 78 can't browse the web. (Disappointing, but expected.)

So, spend one of my slop exceptions; let's use the latest version of a Firefox fork!

- IronFox AppImage is incompatible with libstdc++ older than 2023. (Nasty surprise.)
- ...though firefox.com's binary download works fine.
