I really want to get Wavy Road out the door. I’m having a lot of fun with it, and I hope other people will too.

But first, I need some kind of monetization model.

I’d like to lean into classic game mechanics without making anything too disgusting. My current thinking:

    - Players can buy coins to unlock purely cosmetic vehicles. Everything can still be earned by playing.
    - Players can pay to remove ads. The ads are for fake (and hopefully funny) products.

My current favorite idea to monetize Wavy Road: fictitious ads 😄

Yes, they’re AI-generated, but given the time we live in, I feel like that just makes them more convincing/cringe.

Unsurprisingly, quite a few people seem to dislike this. I think it's a fun way to do what's essentially just a nag screen. If I'm not going this route, I think I need to either do a more traditional nag screen or show real ads.

I could also sell coins that can unlock new vehicles that are cosmetic only, but I'd prefer to have a mechanic that somewhat forces everyone playing the game to eventually upgrade.

While I enjoyed the fictitious ads, I think a cleaner approach that more players will enjoy is that I give them 10 runs every day and then they can unlock unlimited runs for $4.99.

It’s a fun exercise doing a game. You can do things with the UI that aren’t traditionally “allowed”.

I get that the UI of my game isn’t the prettiest and leaves a lot of room for improvement, but I think it’s fun playing with patterns and ideas that I wouldn’t do in a regular app.

What are people’s feelings on letting users buy coins to unlock vehicles?

Coins can be earned in the game and vehicles are cosmetic only, so it’s not ‘pay to win’.

I fear that by asking, I’ll only hear from people who hate it, so please do let menings if you’d use it or don’t care that games offer this 😄

Okay, I think I know what to do.

I’m leaning towards selling packs of vehicles instead of coins. All vehicles can still be bought using coins obtained from playing, but players can also unlock them in packs with an in-app purchase.

Vehicles are still cosmetic only and do not affect gameplay.
