I kinda feel like every one of those people are darker brown than that.

Ella’s coloring—in particular—is just incorrect to my eyes

I’ll give a pass on Tito because he’s pretty light in a lot of pics (but I think he should have the shading that dizzy gets in this comic) but look at these dark skinned geniuses and compare!

This is absolutely the pic I should have started with for literal contrast. Ella and Sinatra
Jeff Watkinsjeffwatkins@mastodon.socialOct 26, 2026, 6:26 PM@griotspeak The odd thing is Larson is a jazz guitarist and should know this.

@jeffwatkins Because I have a soft spot for far side, I am going to chalk it up to laziness/convenience with a side of unexamined racism. I don’t remember many dark skinned folk in the strip. Not great but I’m not making much noise about it until you start erasing folk like this

@griotspeak Yeah, I think mostly he made FUN of white folks.
Oct 26, 2026, 6:32 PM@griotspeak her depiction specifically caught my eye as being wrong

The black and white version looks a bit better, but jesus he or whoever colored this version could not have fucked up their one job harder
Oct 26, 2026, 6:53 PM@griotspeak oh god your caption did not prepare me for _how_ off this is

@einsiedlerspiel yeah, it has been pointed out to me—more than once—that I favor understatement.
Andrew Abernathyandrewabernathy@mastodon.socialOct 26, 2026, 7:19 PM@griotspeak I wonder if that’s the original/correct color; I think only the Sunday strips were colored.
I also wonder where my Far Side collection is… not where it should be. In searching online, I find both B&W and that color version, but not what date it ran on.

@andrewabernathy I’ll concede that the bottom two look fine in black and white but, like I said, Ella’s coloring is Simply Incorrect.
