Always drives me crazy that people don’t know that difference between south and Southeast Asia

@skinnylatte In Germany they can't tell the various Southeast Asian cuisines apart. They just go "zum Asiaten" ("to the Asians", a phrase I find derogatory) and get their westernified "Asian" food.
My dad has been a cook at such restaurants for as long as I can rememeber and I noticed very early on that they don't eat the food that they serve to their customers. Unfortunately they have to adjust what they serve to fit Western expectations if they want to be profitable.
That's why a lot of Vietnamese restaurants also serve sushi, Thai curry, Chinese food and the like. My dad even once took a course on Indian food for a restaurant he was working at. Luckily they didn't implement that.

@skinnylatte yeah, it's crazy-- but perhaps because in the US 'the South' and 'the Southeast' are broadly overlapping as cultural markers?
