@TrueNorthSpice We're basically saying the same thing, in a way. Tariffs are supposed to be import taxes against consumer spending, but parts makers in Canada have been swallowing them with reduced prices, sometimes even selling at a loss along the supply chain, to avoid having consumers pay for his chaos. It's frustrating because we say around here "tariffs are a tax on consumers" but in the case of the automotive sector they work exactly as Trump crows about: Canadian exporters pay the tax.
In the case of GM, I thought Canada handled the bailout pretty well, initially. The US gave them money from its taxpayers, but we took 12% ownership. Ultimately it was Harper who messed this up. He dumped the shares in 2015 for a $3B loss and ended our ability to impose conditions. Harper wasn't interested in socialism but a smokescreen. He knew giving money to a US company would make us angry.
Additionally, when we did have a stake, Harper used the power to bust unions, basically, demanding they reduce labour costs.
