this deadwood cedar was eye-catching too. i usually prefer trees with minimal or no deadwood but this one was impressive. i like the pitcher plant accent.

there were two burning bushes at the show. the other one was in full colour but i preferred the structure on this one. i also liked the contrast of the berries.

this juniper was a little bigger than a shohin but still on the smaller side. i like how compact it is, and i thought it was a good choice to isolate it with the gold panels.

i liked the presentation of this Eastern white cedar. it's hard to see from this angle but it has strips of deadwood along the right side. slab plantings like this one can be challenging to maintain; i've never attempted one myself.

here is a smaller Eastern white cedar, with extensive deadwood sections. you can see that the theme with cedars and junipers is deadwood. sometimes it feels like deadwood has taken over the whole art form, but it does look very striking when done well.

A smaller Eastern white cedar bonsai, a bit bigger than shohin size. The tree is grown in a semi-cascade style, slanting to the left, and it has extensive, sculptural deadwood. The tree is planted in a square cascade pot and displayed on a tall wooden stand. There is an accent plant to the left that has tiny leaves and pink flowers. Part of a different shohin display is visible in the background.

Eastern white cedar is a popular species in North American bonsai because it is native, very hardy, and readily available. one of its drawbacks is that the wild type has somewhat coarse foliage, so it needs to be grown large to keep it in scale. however, it can have similarly twisty and dynamic trunks to junipers, to which it is related. this tree shows that off to its advantage. i also liked the pot, which has a simple but less common shape.

The tree is planted in a bowed rectangular unglazed pot, and displayed on a dark wooden stand. To the left is an accent plant with moss, grasses, and two twiggy trees with red leaves.

this fullmoon maple (not Japanese maple) was not as developed as some of the other trees, but i found it notable for being an uncommon species. i have a soft spot for fullmoon maples; they get some beautiful colours in spring and fall.

i took this photo of a full-sized fullmoon maple in May 2025, when the reds and yellows were most vibrant. i don't recall what variety it was; i gather there are lots of different ones. i can see this species being less common in bonsai for the larger leaves, but they seem to reduce, and the colours are very striking.
