Wow!!

What is WRONG with these people? Their own holy book says, Matthew 25:40:

“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

It makes me sad, even if it worked, as it steals joy from humans. It makes me sad, because it kind if does work, and will improve, who knows how far, but likely far enough to be sustainable.

Helping people think is good. Helping people share ideas and spread understanding is good.

But these things are helping people NOT to think. They are causing people to believe what is not true.

That is evil, and it makes me sad. Also angry.

A truly lovely book!

It seems likely that we'll begin hearing from GOP candidates distancing themselves from the rapist in chief. The only question the press should ask is "Where were you when it mattered?"

I feel this. The comments over on lobste.rs are ... interesting.

Is the point of programming the production of "software"?

What if, just if, it isn't?

Luxury! When I was a child, computers hadn't been invented, and if you've never had a file drawer stuck into your bottom, well, let me tell you, it's an experience!

Vote! Vote for the lesser evil, every time. We'll whittle away at the evil.

Maybe we can prosecute some criminals, and chow down in some rich along the way.

This is important, and speaks the truth. I wish my "AI"-using friends would heed it.

What if, instead of this all or nothing win/lose style of "government",
we actually tried things out, looked at the results, improved the good bits, reduced the bad?

There has been some experimentation, in communities. And of course there are many ideas in place around the world.

Maybe we could make things better by trying stuff.

No, that could never work.

Public calling out is shaming, not teaching. It is quite unlikely to result in improvement. It might cause the perp to shut up, but it won't change their mind.

Public calling-out might still be desirable, perhaps to show support to someone who was wronged by the perp's behavior.

But if we want the perp to change, we probably need to take them aside.

I do not claim to be good at any of this.

Someone said something about calling out others for something bad they did or said. Doesn't matter who or what, that's not my point.

My point is: if in fact we want someone to think seriously about what they said / did, calling them out in public is probably the worst way to accomplish that goal. In public, they'll be embarrassed, become angry, defensive, etc. They will be literally incapable of thinking or learning.

...

So, I don't know, but it seems to me that if someone toots something public, it should be ok to reply to it, unless that very toot requests no replies. Even then it would seem odd to me.

I know that others feel differently. I just don't get it. In particular how are we supposed to know when we can and when we can't?

Is this a conversation medium, or just a publishing medium? If the latter, why is there a reply button?

Reply to this or don't, as you wish.

This seems likely to be important. I hope it offers some answers. The current system leads to Hunger Games or worse.

I would have thought that paying someone to vote a particular way was illegal.

I know there are bad things going on in the world that I am ignoring.

I'm sorry for that.

There are more bad things than I can stand to think about.

I turn away, sometimes, not because I don't care, but because I do.

Will Durant, I think, but true nonetheless.

People paste this cat face into all kinds of things. What does it mean, does it refer to something i should know about?

Hello, loves!

We talked about some code, and excellence, last night.

The demon is seductive. A beautiful, challenging succubus.

It seems friendly - but it has no feelings.

It seems to be trying to help - but it has no intentions at all: it is only chaos.

It seems to understand - but understands nothing.

Meanwhile, it steals the work of people, steals the jobs of people, consumes vital resources, and transfers money and power from ordinary people to the super-rich.

It's screwing up the world, while not delivering to you what you think it is.

It is evil.
