We just all need to be gayer, harder and more publicly.

"As of September, 2026, 3,277 farms and gardens now sprout across Detroit, according to nonprofit gardening group Keep Growing Detroit, or KGD.

That number has steadily grown over the last several decades, giving the city national renown as a leader in urban farming."

This is why adding accessibility data to the current BCD framework is tricky.

Accessibility needs behavioural tests. It’s not enough that a feature has the correct role, it also needs to behave correctly.

Report: Palantir Targets UK MPs With ‘Intimidating’ Letters

"British MPs who criticised Palantir in parliament received 'intimidating' letters from the US spytech firm".

Eg, Palantir warned Clive Lewis that it "was surveilling his activities relating to Palantir last month", a letter that Lewis described as “very Big Brother” & an “implicit threat”.

I would like to promote this post, as a girl who works with AI on a daily basis: DO NOT GIVE YOUR BANK PASSWORD(S) TO AI AGENTS!

This was the calmest Raven from the morning. They seem to be most tolerant of human presence at the beginning and end of the day, possibly coinciding with their grooming and self-maintenance tasks.

It was enabled by all of the people who framed F/OSS operating systems adversarially and decided that making ‘Linux software’ was more important than making portable F/OSS that ran on a load of different platforms.

When I started getting involved in F/OSS, portable code was a mark of quality. If your software was x86-only, or ran on only one OS, it was seen as poor quality. Between then and around 2010, a load of projects went from ‘we create great software for *NIX systems’ to ‘we target Linux but take patches for other systems if anyone wants to deliver them’ and then finally to ‘we develop Linux software, if you want to run anywhere else maybe you can maintain a downstream fork but we’ll probably break it every few days’.

Some of that shift was from companies shipping Linux software, but a lot was community-led projects.

This created a single point of failure. As long as most Linux software ran on various other platforms (Minix, BSDs, OpenSolaris derivatives, and so on), Linux was just another replaceable component. Don’t like the direction it’s taking? Pick one of the other options. But as soon as the software you care about became ‘Linux software’ that might run elsewhere, you’ve consolidated power into whoever controls Linux.

The outcome of this was, shockingly, exactly the same thing as happens every time a large group of people decide to give control of something important to a small group of people.

@purplepadma @WeirdWriter
Most of those that lost their jobs to washing machines were poor women, mostly black. So of course no one cried for them.

@WeirdWriter Actually, I’m pretty sure that some people whose livelihood depended on running a handwash laundry did in fact cry when washing machines made their business obsolete. It’s just historical and a working class problem, two things that tech bros don’t care about.

Blocked a disabled Tech Bro that unironically said with his full chest in another thread not by me that LLMs are amazing, and that humans deserve to lose their jobs, and then equated his justification by saying no one cried when washing machines were invented to replace people that washed clothes and otherwise by hand. I'm here to remind you that disabled people do not think alike, and it is OK to not listen to every single disabled person with the same velocity that you would not listen to, for example, a gay Nazi. Disabled people can be Tech Bros too. Obviously, hear them out before assuming but I'm here to remind you it's okay to block the minute they crossed that line with your morals.

I put this in a reply but I feel like it is worth removing the kink part and making a non-CW'd post

One thing I learned in these 30 years and 11 in relationships is that fairness in a relationship is not about doing the same things to each other. Is putting the same amount of energy into the relationship.

Personally I'll happily make breakfast in bed for someone, I'll learn new recipes to cook what they enjoy, and I will (to a fault) be there to encourage or support partners through every tiny thing.

But I don't need these things done to me. Support is obviously important, but it doesn't have to be the same way, and I hate staying in bed for a long time, so someone bringing me breakfast in bed would be actively horrible.

On the other hand, I SUCK at planning anything special, anniversaries, birthdays, anything of that sort comes up and I'll have a panic attack if I try to do anything. If I'm expected to do that, things are going to fall apart.

Most importantly, though, what I would consider a fair relationship with someone who likes planning special days and things is that they'll do that, and I'll make special coffee thinking of them. Because, if they enjoy planning, it's not a chore to put that energy on it, and I enjoy making coffee, so the energy of figuring out how they like it, and taking longer to get my coffee in the morning, is no issue at all.

I say this with a harmless example, but I've had partners worry that they don't do enough for me because of how I support them and they don't do it the same way, but then if I bring up the support they have me they go "yeah, but that was nothing to me" and that's what feels fair to me, because me supporting them usually also feels like nothing special, just something I do because I care for the relationship

I guess this is kinda rambly, but hopefully there's some useful thoughts on relationships buried here

more or less confirms that the PHP exploit on Wednesday was overblown, and contrary to claims it would be exploited in 15 mins, we haven’t even seen one confirmed exploit yet. even proof of concept exploits are incredibly hard to write and deploy.

AI companies were lying. again

@icculus the world is going to be smaller in the future and so what i care about is that the smaller world is allowed to exist and that is a good one

Listen, I posted the picture of a couple of poorly panted Warhammer miniatures, got a few likes, looked at who liked it and followed those who seemed to boost a lot, and now I am awash of photos of gorgeously painted miniatures!

Your timeline is as alive (or dead) as you make it!

Hey, @EUCommission, fuck you too.

On Wednesday, EU Member States approved a change to the GDPR that would put the profit-making interests of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX over European's fundamental right to data protection. According to the approved text, processing personal data “in the context of AI” should automatically be lawful. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens “in the context” of AI. Schrems: “Under the agreed text, the profits of AI companies would typically trump European’s fundamental right to privacy. This is nothing but a digital expropriation of Europeans.”

“If you don’t use AI you’re going to get left behind.”

Gosh, I sure hope so. I see where you’re going and it sucks.

The way computer security works in 2026:

1. queers go to congress and demonstrate multiple serious exploits against actual security software. the maintainers deny there’s a problem. nobody pays attention except other queers at congress

2. OpenAI finds a bug which could, hypothetically, in a very difficult-to-orchestrate attack and in the absence of already-existing mitigations, have a security implication. the entire industry has an overnight meltdown. coverage on national news stations worldwide. meanwhile, nobody is provably able to actually make it work as an exploit
