I guess the fact that this broke containment sort of prove my point 🙂
Anyway, I have nothing to peddle to you, so find an artist you like and support them (even just by telling them you like what they make)!

"The Mastodon time line is empty and boring"
Listen, I posted the picture of a couple of poorly panted Warhammer miniatures, got a few likes, looked at who liked it and followed those who seemed to boost a lot, and now I am awash of photos of gorgeously painted miniatures!
Your timeline is as alive (or dead) as you make it!
My first attempt to use contrast paint (here, just on the skin). I am still a bit clumsy with the brush, but I like how these turned out.

Random reminder that, despite what you read in "Lord of the Flies", when a real group of teenagers happened to get stranded on a inhabited island, they didn't start killing each other. On the contrary they worked together, built a commune, and survived in good health for 15 months (when they were saved by a passing ship).
Most people are good people. Even teenagers 😉
"This is why AI users often sound like they're using totally different technologies. Workers who get to decide whether and how to incorporate AI into their jobs are doubtless finding lots of utility and delight from the new tool. These workers are "centaurs" – people assisted by machines.
The workers who describe their on-the-job AI as a hellish monstrosity are being ordered to use AI, in workplaces where mass firings have terrified the survivors, who are told they must use the AI to make up for their jobless former colleagues. They are reverse-centaurs: machines assisted by human workers."

"AI companies claim their tools couldn't exist without training on copyrighted material. It turns out, they could — it's just really hard. To prove it, AI researchers trained a new model that's less powerful but much more ethical. That's because the LLM's dataset uses only public domain and openly licensed material."
tl;dr: If you use public domain data (i.e. you don't steal from authors and creators) you can train a LLM just as good as what was cutting edge a couple of years ago. What makes it difficult is curating the data, but once the data has been curated once, in principle everyone can use it without having to go through the painful part.
So the whole "we have to violate copyright and steal intellectual property" is (as everybody already knew) total BS.
Feels like the right time to start planning for moving all international scientific conferences to somewhere outside the US.

Schematic of the epicycle model, as requested by @johncarlosbaez (see https://mathstodon.xyz/@johncarlosbaez/113652794327730499 for his thread on the topic).
Apart from having (hopefully) more colorblind-friendly colors, this one is in the #PublicDomain instead of being copyrighted.

* You have my blessing to use my animations (#PhysicsFactlet) for your lectures etc. Just let me know when you do 🙂
* I tried to explain how I make them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zOUZlHKKbs
* I release almost all of my scientific visualizations in the public domain, and upload them (with the code used to generate them) on Wikimedia Commons. The only exceptions are those that I consider not interesting enough. You can find them here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Berto&ilshowall=1
