@devnull @nando161 Not really, EU sizes are based on the old Paris point, with one size corresponding to 2/3 cm, so they’re not arbitrary at all. They’re simply a historical measurement system that predates modern metric/ISO standardisation. It simply comes from a different historical system of measurement. Outdated perhaps, but not stupid, it was perfectly systematic for its time.

@telebrief I know it's 2/3 cm… 1 unit = 2/3 of a centimeter is not practical… The Japanese system on the other hand is straightforward.

It doesn't matter if it predates the ISO system, we're not in 1300s something anymore… It's still being used in 2026, which is **way long** after the ISO and the Japanese systems have been created. The fact it's still being used is stupid… Just because "it's historical" doesn't mean it should be used forever and can't be deemed a stupid choice…

@devnull @nando161 Except that foot length and shoe/last length are different measurements. EU sizing traditionally measures the latter, Japanese sizing the former.

@telebrief Except feet vs last was not my point… The issue is using an arbitrary unit of 2/3 cm for… reasons and that is deemed above criticism just because "it's historical"… (Fuck stupid conservatism…)

If EU was 28,6 size for 28 cm instead of "43", the additional 0.6 because it measures the last rather than the feet, wouldn't be a an issue…

@devnull @nando161 Why should 29 be inherently more useful to the customer than 44? Once the number represents the last rather than the foot, the supposed intuitiveness largely disappears anyway: “28” would never actually mean a 28 cm foot, so a centimetre-looking number could arguably be more misleading than an obviously conventional size like 44.

@WellsiteGeo EU sizes doesn't say anything about any of these measurements, it's just the last length in ⅔ of a centimeter. 44 just means last's length = 44 × ⅔ cm so I fail to see how "EU is better because other systems only give the foot"… So does the EU size system… just in an arbitrary unit… Even if it were the foot length, it's still an arbitrary unit…

While the Japanese and the ISO systems are not perfect… They are a better starting point than paris points…
