It is a lot more complicated to add keyboard shortcuts to your web app than you might initially think, featuring a big honkin' table. #a11ty https://ericwbailey.website/published/how-an-accessibility-designer-adds-keyboard-shortcuts-to-a-web-app/
Jan 28, 2026, 3:22 PM@eric 🙏 This is such a good read, you added work to my backlog
@Kilian I am so sorry I cursed you with Knowledge™
Jan 28, 2026, 3:26 PM@eric we hunger for more
@eric "However, Alt—otherwise known the Windows key—opens the Start Menu."
This isn't accurate. Alt and Windows are separate keys, and the latter is what opens the start menu.
@eric Separately: I spent the entire time reading this filled with anxiety that you were going to bring up the different ways to determine which keys were pressed in JavaScript.
@jscholes I would never.
@jscholes Oop, thanks for the clarification! Will update and credit.
Jan 28, 2026, 8:23 PMI sorta kinda hate those things, when they take actions (just navigation is fine I guess).
We have a cat
and a kid
and I’m just generally clumsy (#a11ty shoutout for clumsy people)
and I have hundreds of tabs open
and macOS keyboard focus is weird 😅 (clicking on a window can leave the keyboard focus on the old window!)
and I probably don’t love a website enough to learn the shortcuts sorry!
So yeah ‘e’ might mean I want you to end the world but it was more likely just the cat or something
Possibly this is just JIRA ptsd talking
