Roderickrvkennedy@mastodon.socialNov 6, 2026, 8:38 AM@pluralistic they're the only time I've ever seen the words "Polite Notice" on a notice that was actually polite.
Christopher Linfootclinfoot@mastodon.org.ukNov 6, 2026, 9:34 AMAs a Brit I can offer some background.
The Polite Notice thing started a few years ago when people started to create signs that looked exactly like police signs (same font, colours, spacing etc) in the hope that people glancing at them would assume that they were looking at an official notice. No parking was a common one.
Then Polite Notice started to be used for other things.
Now it's just a passive aggressive signal to ask people to respect local rules.

(1) It is not 'polite' - it is patronising and hence rather rude.
(2) It is not a 'notice' - it is an instruction.
(3) The writing style is that of an extremely pompous idiot who doesn't understand how English works doing their best to not appear as such and thus having the entirely opposite effect. This misuse of the English language wormed its way in British pseudo-official announcements several years ago and it's about time it was banned.
Spelling Mistakes Cost Livesspellingmistakescostlives@mastodon.ieNov 6, 2026, 6:13 PM@pluralistic My favourite 'polite notice' I saw in Ireland was about a path being resurfaced and ended with the ominous sentence: "*Apologise* for any inconvenience"
