When you die, your family will be charged $100 for every time you've ever honked your car horn. I cannot tell you how I know this, but please just understand with all sober certainty how very important it is that you never again honk your car horn.

@merlinwisdom what's particularly fun is it's illegal to sound a car horn when the car's not moving, or at nighttime in a residential area, in the UK.

yet manufacturers are allowed to sell cars with features that beep the horn when the car's stationary, like "find my car"
the one that constantly irritates me is the car beeping at me when I try to lock it because it sensed my partner's keys still inside the car (in her bag, safely in the boot). one of these days I'll wire a physical override switch
I find that most of my honking takes place when my car is stationary. What do you do when the car in front of you refuses to acknowledge that the light is green?

@lukeratta @merlinwisdom and the other thing I do... at one point I was taught to leave a "tyres and tarmac gap" with the car in front, more recently I've seen the same idea expressed as "stop while you can still see the whole car", i.e. before your bonnet cuts off your view of the car in front's tyres. as well as giving a bit more of a buffer if you get rear-ended, it means if the car in front persistantly fails to move when the lights go green, you've got the space to steer around them
I greatly respect the idea here, but when maintaining my employment depends on getting from Point A to Point B in a certain amount of time, and the car in front of me doesn’t move for an entire light cycle, then I can’t accept the premise.

Mostly California, but I’ve experienced this all over the US.

Usually, though I’ve also seen people staring off into the middle distance, presumably contemplating their existence, so that’s somewhat excusable.
