I've been seeing AI usage creep into our community theater just a little bit around the edges over the last year, and I would like us to have a no-AI policy, so yesterday I started the ball rolling on that during our monthly board meeting.

I actually made an attempt to play politics well for once, and instead of griping about AI, I proposed we form a working group to survey what other community theaters are doing with AI policies. I figured that would go over better with the other board members than starting the conversation at no.

I also knew that the board member who is most vociferously anti-AI would get agitated as soon as the topic came up. He indeed started yelling about it. No one else volunteered to join my working group, so I recruited him to help. I think his outbursts made me look much more reasonable, and looking reasonable seems to be important currency on the board.

Anyhow, now I'm in the driver's seat of putting together an AI policy, and I've got a very anti-AI board member helping me, so I'm feeling optimistic.

@MLE_online I’m curious how it’s been showing around the edges up in community theater? Good luck with your mission!

@jonobie One person used it to generate some printed visuals that were integrated into a set, and I suspect it was used in some other parts of that set design. Another person used it to design a set of French doors that we built. It's noticeable when it's used to generate plans for sets because none of the dimensions make sense and we have to redesign everything.

I think the guy designing our latest set is using it again, but that's just my suspicion.

Another board member used to to assess how difficult it would be to produce a show that were were considering for next season.

@MLE_online Oh, interesting! Things that would have never occurred to me that people were trying to use it for. That seems particularly frustrating in the case of the set design where it's making extra work for all of you.

@jonobie It's also frustrating because we have people who would willingly do the work because they enjoy it and want the experience, but instead, those tasks are being given to a computer

@MLE_online Oh, yeah, that’s no good. I’ve always thought set design seems fascinating and can see that the people doing it would want to, well, actually do it!
