Oct 20, 2026, 1:37 PMthe thing is - they could have made it even worse than this. the designer(s) clearly showed restraint. there are a LOT of horrible new UI trends that i'm not seeing here at all. you can see they thoughtfully considered them, and decided they should include only a small, tasteful sprinkling of, say, 20-25% of the horrible new UI trends
@jk what upset me a little in the design blog post was one offhanded remark that rounded corners were used because they match the design that web browsers are moving towards. but is that what we want? to make the web page look like the web browser? is that rlly a goal ?

@760ceb3b9c0ba4872cadf3ce35a7a4 @jk yeah that rationale in particular jumped out at me as being especially spurious, like a fig leaf over "we like the way this looks". the contention that it's "friendly" is interesting because it's more a statement on the relationship between a design trend and the vibe-context within which corporations offer their products. dunno none of that is super damning it's just an unfortunate lack of clarity.
@760ceb3b9c0ba4872cadf3ce35a7a4 @jk to be clear since such opinions do seem to travel, i think the org has dramatically improved its communication over the past couple years, particularly around future plans. i do appreciate it. ultimately design is their call, and the ecosystem is such that we're not as locked into it as eg a totally proprietary product. but design standards need crits to grow.
@jk Does Mastodon not support custom skins? Like is there not a themes or templates directory that you can upload a bunch of html and css files into, or some kinda theme manager where the admin can go download a theme from a central repository?
Oct 20, 2026, 2:26 PM@ifixcoinops i don't know! this is all i see on the interface since it's changed. not much that can be configured. i don't want to set up my own instance particularly. to be quite honest i've never been very interested in web development or how web services work or anything, whenever i've looked into it, it seems like a huge mess that would give me an aneurism
