factorio.com/blog/post/fff-446 I love that they add support for whatever platform I'm interested in when I'm interested in it. You know the Czechs really make great stuff.

It's a little weird that the Raspberry Pi can run Minecraft but not Factorio, given the relative graphic fidelity, but Factorio's got weird 2.5D stuff going on that I guess would be facilitated by some of modern OpenGL's excesses. This is what we get from straying from God's own OpenGL 1.1.

@indigoparadox@mastodon.social i'm tempted to request RISC-V support, just for the server.

as for graphics, factorio is way heavier than MC due to the girth of its assets; you can fit all of MC's art in to a few frames of the assembly machine animation. the goings-on that happen on the screen are incidental to simply holding the assets in memory. also the raspi has always shipped with a criminally underpowered GPU :(

@purple When most people talk about the Raspberry Pi, I feel like they're thinking about the Raspberry Pi 3, while when I talk about it, I'm thinking about the 16GB Raspberry Pi 5... I'm not sure how much of that is usable by the GPU... which is limited to OpenGL ES, yeah. 😩

@indigoparadox@mastodon.social the game really needs 8GB to load "enough". it isn't enough to hold everything but it's enough to keep it smooth. no clue what the split is on the 5, or if it's split at all, sorry. i actually haven't touched a raspi since they started with the bootlicking.
