@chuls You were perhaps after “classic” (i.e. old-school?) black-and-white films, but for me it would have to be Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes (2003)
@2ruth classic as in older, yes. but thanks :)
@chuls I can't decide between these:
- 12 angry men
- paths of glory
- city lights
- le trou
- dr. Strangelove
All absolutely timeless movies, that have not lost any of their magic for me.
@tildeMtilde we actually ended up watching 12 Angry Men yesterday and I agree, there are a lot of very timeless aspects to it
@chuls uccellacci et uccellini
@chuls but if you're allowing more than one then in no particular order
Umberto D.
Alphaville
L'Oro di Napoli
Germany Year Zero
The Grand Illusion
Hiroshima Mon Amour
@gavin no rules :) just looking for inspiration
@chuls ... and your faves are?
@gavin that's a good question :) I ended up asking because I felt like I wanted to watch some old black and white films for the art of the monochrome shot. and I couldn't decide, so
but in the past I have enjoyed everything by Charlie Chaplin, perhaps less so for the aesthetics. I also used to go through a Bette Davis phase, but while these films looked great, from memory, it was more about her than the aesthetics. and Metropolis is an absolute classic of course.
@tildeMtilde @gavin I've actually been meaning to watch the Third Man for such a long time. I think I might have aeons ago but I don't remember. but people keep asking if we want to go on the third man tour in Vienna and I'm always like, I need to watch the film (again) first. so that's on the agenda now
@chuls
Night of the Living Dead, I was far too young to watch and my uncle turned it off just before Ben was killed. It was at least a decade before I found out the climax.
