    @VeroniqueB99 @jcrabapple exactly. Limit their ability to profile and track you by using old tech *or* new tech that provides little to no data.

    My car is 26 years old. My phone is new but is not "smart". My headphones don't have Bluetooth. My watch is semi-smart, and I need to work on that.

    All of the tech that's marketed for it's convenience is meant to encourage adoption to aid civilian surveillance.

    @stevenray @VeroniqueB99 @jcrabapple If you know *that* you can to "opt out", *how* to "opt out" and of course if you even have the chance to do so? Like, if your company provides you with a car and a phone for your job, it might be hard to pick something old and "not smart". If you don't know which of your devices have bluetooth or wi-fi, then you can't easily turn it off (you might have heard about certain cheap wired headphones using Bluetooth regardless because it's actually cheaper/easier) unless you get rid of each and every device before you enter the car (now try to take away your young kid's favorite headphones before a long and boring drive). Or what if you depend on certain types of assistant technology because of a disability, chronical illness or something like that?

    Opting out of technology that's to be nothing but a "convenience" to you might sound like an easy thing to do, but in many cases, it isn't really a choice, so saying "you can opt out of this batshit type of surveillance" seems pretty clever at first glance, but actually it's a privileged point of view, I think. It's not really how we can deal with this type of problem in the long term.

    @bwana @VeroniqueB99 @jcrabapple Sure, we each have our own unique situations which’ll determine what our response will be. In my case, I drive my own car, and I don’t need assistive technology. Everyone is different, and I’m not suggesting the same solution will work for everyone.

    Separately, not knowing which of your devices has or doesn’t have a certain technology isn’t an excuse. It’s up to each of us to do the research and implement a solution to whatever extent we can, if we have an opportunity to do so.
